Township committee welcomes newest firefighters
by John Koster
The Wyckoff Township Committee has welcomed seven new volunteer firefighters, including three regular members and four apprentices. Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Chief William P. Rose and many uniformed senior firefighters joined the Wyckoff Township Committee in welcoming the new firefighters to the department and witnessed their oath of office. All but one of the new firefighters will be joining Company #1, which is located between Wyckoff Town Hall and the library. The regular members are William Jensen, Scott Amantea, and Robert Vander Platt, all reporting to Company # 1. Company #1 apprentices include William Pettit, James Viapiano, and Andrew Bell. Apprentice Grant Van Orden will join Company #3, which is located in the Sicomac section of Wyckoff near the border with Passaic County. Company #2, which did not receive any volunteers from the latest increment, is located near the border with Midland Park and Ridgewood. The Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department, with 100 members functioning from three different engine houses, is said to be the only volunteer department that conducts annual competitive inspections by outside professional paid firefighters and retired senior volunteers from other depart-

ments. The annual inspection is followed by an awards dinner. New members receive 140 hours of basic firematics training at the Bergen County Law & Public Safety Insti-
tute in Mahwah, and continue their training in Wyckoff every evening. Volunteers develop and practice skills such as search and rescue, fire suppression, fire attack, fire ground communications, and advanced rescue techniques.
The Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department welcomes new firefighters and personnel who assist with communications during emergencies. Prospective members should be at least 18 years old and should have graduated from high school. Chief Mike Rose said that community members who do not want to be firefighters may consider service as fire police to handle traffic emergencies or members of the fire desk team, maintaining vital contact

between the firefighters and other emergency units. Recruits who wish to become either firefighters or fire police are required to take free courses at the Bergen County Law & Public Safety Institute in Mahwah, and to attend weekly drills with their fire companies. The Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department responded to more than 560 emergency calls last year. The department also helped host Safety Town for children; offered talks at houses or worship, schools, and day care centers; and took part in the YMCA Health Fair, the Buddy Walk for Down syndrome; and escorted Santa Claus around Wyckoff in a fire engine.
Prospective firefighters, fire police, and communications workers may drop by any firehouse on a Monday night and speak with a fire officer about opportunities. J. KOSTER
