The Midland Park Board of Education last week introduced a tentative budget of $19.2 million for the 2011-12 school year. The public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, March 29 at 8 p.m. The amount to be raised by taxation to support the spending plan would be $17,154,828. This is up $3,369,369 over the current year’s budget, a 2 percent increase, as limited by state law. Debt service would remain unchanged at $450,059. The budget would increase the school portion of homeowner’s taxes by $.038 per $100 assessed valuation. A home

assessed at $300,000, the borough’s average, would see its annual tax bill increase by $113.53 for school purposes only. The school election this year is scheduled for Wednesday, April 27, a change in day and week from previous years due to a conflict with the Jewish Passover. At that time, voters will also elect three trustees to the board of education. The terms of board members Ray Moraski, James Canellas and Maryalice Thomas Hagerty are up this year. Moraski has served for nine years. Canellas is finishing his first three-year term. Thomas Hagerty is filling a two-year unexpired term. On Feb. 16, a Maltbie Avenue resident reported to Officer Kenneth Junta that fraudulent charges were made on his credit card. All of the items were purchased online, and totaled more than $1,400. The case was turned over to the detective bureau. The owner of a local business reported to Chief John Casson and Officer Junta on Feb. 17 that he was the victim of a fraud. He stated he opened an online site selling computers and accessories. Approximately 10 fraudulent purchases totaling $30,000 were shipped within two weeks. The last shipment of six laptops, which totaled more than $5,000, was shipped to an individual in Pennsylvania who made the purchase using a fake Discover Card number. The case was turned over to the detective bureau. On Feb. 17, while Detective John Gibbons was at a local business investigating a previous incident that occurred there, he observed an individual, who was later identified as a 16-year-old male Ridgewood resident, shoplift a packet of beef jerky valued at approximately $6. The teen was arrested and transported to headquarters, where he was processed. He was released into the custody of his step-father, and will appear in Juvenile Court. Officers Noah Van Vliet and Kevin Van Dyk assisted. As a result of a traffic stop on Feb. 21, three Waldwick male residents, one of whom was a juvenile, and two female juvenile Hawthorne residents, were arrested after patrol observed the driver of the vehicle disobey a traffic signal. When Officer Christopher Birch approached the vehicle and asked the driver for his credentials, he detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the rear of the vehicle. One adult male was charged with possession of an alcoholic beverage under 21 years of age and possessing an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle. failure to stop at a traffic signal, possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage under the age of 21-years-old, and a violation of the provisional driver’s license, having too many passengers. One juvenile male was charged with underage possession of an alcoholic beverage. A juvenile female was charged with possession of marijuana, less than 50 grams, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of an alcoholic beverage under the legal age. One juvenile female was charged with possession of an alcoholic beverage under the legal age of 21. Officer Steven Vander Pyl assisted in the in the investigation. On Feb. 28, patrol was dispatched to a local business on a report of two suspicious individuals suspected of shoplifting. Upon arriving at the site, patrol witnessed two females walking away from the store with store employees following them into the parking lot. One of the suspects, a 27year-old Brooklyn resident, immediately stated that she stole items. The store manager stated the second suspect, a 20-yearold Brooklyn resident, pushed her when she exited the store. The stolen merchandise, cosmetics and toiletries, amounted to approximately $500. The actors were transported to headquarters where they were processed. One subject was charged with shoplifting, with bail set at $10,000, with no 10 percent. The other subject was charged with robbery, with bail set at $15,000, with no 10 percent. The defendants were remanded to the Bergen County Jail after failing to post bail. Sgt. Michael Powderley, Det. Gibbons, Officer Vander Pyl and Officer Michael Canonico investigated. On March 1, Officer Van Dyk took a report from a Cottage Street resident who stated a fraudulent transaction, in the amount of $99.92, was made by an unknown person using his debit card. The incident was forwarded to the detective bureau.
