Franklin Lakes
Roller hockey rink to be dismantled, parts sold
by Frank J. McMahon The Franklin Lakes Council has approved the recommendation of the Franklin Lakes Recreation Committee to dismantle the roller hockey rink on the site of the Franklin Lakes Recreation and Community Center on Vichiconti Way. The recommendation also calls for the sale of the fiberglass-faced board system and tempered glass that line the edge of the rink. At a recent public council session, Councilman Frank Pedone, chairman of the council’s standing committee on recreation, advised the governing body of the Franklin Lakes Recreation Committee’s intention to sell the rink’s components. Franklin Lakes Borough Administrator Gregory Hart explained that maintenance problems at the rink prompted the idea of dismantling the structure and selling the board system, which he said has significant value. Hart explained, however, that the rink was installed with grant funding from the Bergen County Open Space Fund and, according to the executive director of that fund, the components of the rink can only be sold if the proceeds from the sale is used for a purpose that would qualify for open space funding, such as municipal park improvements and not for buildings and playgrounds. Hart said the borough intends to use the proceeds from the online sale of the fiberglass board system to install outdoor basketball courts and to increase the parking at the recreation facility. According to Mayor Frank Bivona, it would cost $60,000 to fix the roller hockey surface and there would be no guarantee the surface would be usable next year. The council agreed that a letter would be sent to the Bergen County Open Space Trust Fund informing that body of the borough’s intention to sell the board system and that a minimum price for the items will be established by the recreation and parks director and the borough administrator. The asphalt surface of the rink was striped for both roller hockey and for two basketball courts. The baskets and backboards at the end of each 85-foot basketball court were movable when roller hockey was being played. Bleachers are located on the southeastern long side of the rink, and lighting was located at each of its four corners on an asphalt surface that extends outside the board system. Originally, the rink was planned for the site of the tennis courts on Old Mill Road, but a lack of parking at that site prompted the borough’s planner to recommend the rink be located on the site of the recreational facility.
Roller hockey was very popular 10 years ago when the borough’s 185-foot by 85-foot asphalt rink surface was built at a cost of $283,302. Today, the Franklin Lakes Recreation Committee operates a roller hockey clinic in the spring, but does not have a roller hockey program. During the 1999-2000 season, over 150 boys and girls in the kindergarten through grade five were enrolled in a roller hockey program operated by an organization now known as the North Jersey Youth Roller Hockey Association. The association, which is separate from the borough’s recreation department, now uses Wyckoff’s roller hockey rink, which is located at the rear section of the athletic facility behind Wyckoff Town Hall just before the tennis courts.
The Franklin Lakes Borough Council has sent a resolution to Governor Chris Christie and other state officials stating its opposition to bills in the New Jersey Assembly and Senate that would revise the requirements for the delivery of emergency medical services in the borough. The resolution was also sent to Senate President Stephen
