March 9, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 19 New home movie releases include ‘The Walking Dead’ by Dennis Seuling “The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season” (Anchor Bay) is probably one of the most ambitious horror series made specifically for television. The notion of cannibalistic zombies roaming mindlessly with only one instinct -- to eat the living -- seems way beyond taboo for the small screen. AMC took on the show, which premiered on Halloween 2010. County Sheriff Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) awakens from a coma utterly alone in a post-apocalyptic zombie world. The world he knows is gone. The series, based on Robert Kirkman’s successful, popular comic book series, tells the story of the weeks and months that follow the apocalypse. The AMC original series is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. All six episodes are contained in a twodisc set. “The Walking Dead” is graphic and doesn’t cut away from the more gruesome scenes. Fans of zombie flicks will appreciate that. Special effects are outstanding, from the zombies’ ghastly makeup to sequences in which the zombies feast on their victims. Overall, the acting is good, particularly from Lincoln as the sheriff, Jon Bernthal as Deputy Shane Walsh, and Jeffrey DeMunn as feisty retired widower Dale. The downside is that, after the first episode, there are long stretches of dialogue with little zombie footage. When they do appear, they’re creepy, scary, and The cast of the AMC mini-series ‘The Walking Dead.’ make for exciting moments. Bonus features are generous. In addition to a makingof featurette, extras include a behind-the-scenes look at the zombie makeup, a conversation with the producers, a trailer, and six mini-featurettes about assorted members of the cast. “The Next Three Days” (Lionsgate) combines an involved caper with a solid action thriller. One morning, Lara Brennan (Elizabeth Banks) is arrested for the murder of her boss. She argued with him the previous day and was seen by a co-worker at the scene of the crime. Her fingerprints on the murder weapon and a blood stain on her raincoat add up to a strong case against her.
