June 22, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 29 Wyckoff Wanderings Student council receives Jefferson Award The Student Council members at Sicomac Elementary School have been selected to receive a 2011 Jefferson Awards Globe Changer for its donation to KIND (Kids in Need of Desks). The Sicomac Student Council initiated a project to support KIND, which provides school desks for children in Malawi who currently are seated on the floor for their daily lessons. Sicomac students experienced a lesson while seated on the floor and they decided to raise funds to purchase desks. The children raised awareness about the project and collected $6,000 to donate to KIND. The Jefferson Awards recognize community and public service in America. The awards are named for Thomas Jefferson. Summer camp for children with autism set The Wyckoff Y will present Camp Rising Stars, a camp experience for children ages five through 12 with autism spectrum disorders. Directed by Brady Beach, BCBA, activities include swimming, sensory integration, arts and crafts, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, music therapy, social skills, gross motor skills, and more. All Y staff completes intense training specializing in behavior management, visual and physical structure, and techniques for working with children on the autism spectrum. Session I will run Aug. 1 through 5; Session II is Aug. 8 through 12; and Session III is Aug. 15 through 19. Blood drive planned A Wyckoff Community Blood Drive, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus will be held on June 21 at Saint Elizabeth’s Church located at 700 Wyckoff Avenue from 4 to 7:30 p.m. All types of blood are needed especially types O- and O+. Any healthy individual age 17 through 75 and weighing at least 110 pounds can donate blood. Donors should eat a moderate meal before donating and must bring identification showing signature. All donors receive a complimentary cholesterol screening with every blood donation. PSA testing will be done for all men 40 years and older. To schedule an appointment, call (201) 251-3703. Seniors plan events The Wyckoff Seniors will host a trip to the Hunterdon Playhouse for a luncheon and the musical revue, “Unforgettable,” on July 14. Other upcoming events for the seniors include a picnic at the Larkin House on Aug. 23, and a four-night trip to the Indian Head Resort in New Hampshire planned for Sept. 12 through 16. The Wyckoff Seniors group meets every Tuesday at 11:15 a.m. at the Larkin House at 380 Godwin Avenue. Summer Reading Club to begin Readers ranging from the “read-to-me” age to grade six are invited to travel the seven continents through the Wyckoff Library’s Summer Reading Club, “One World, Many Stories.” Registration will begin Friday, June 24 at the library’s temporary location, 637 Wyckoff Avenue. Events planned for the summer include magic, music, juggling, theater, art workshops, food, games, and prizes. The first program, Mr. Fish’s Super Scientific Circus, the Science of Magic, will be held June 29 at 2 p.m. Registration is required. For details, call (201) 891-4866. Library offers summer programs for teens Throughout the summer, Wyckoff teens entering grades seven through 10 are invited to join the Wyckoff Library’s summer reading program. Registration will run from June 23 through Aug. 18. In addition to the reading program, book discussion groups Talk It Up, for teens in grades seven through nine; and Speak Out, for those in grades 10 through 12 will run through the end of July. Golf Outing to benefit Billy’s Buddies The Wyckoff Family YMCA will host a Golf Outing to benefit its programs for children with Down syndrome and their families on Wednesday, July 13 at Ballyowen Golf Club in Hamburg. The event will include breakfast, morning and afternoon rounds of golf, lunch, prizes, contests, an auction, cocktail hour and hors d’oeuvres. The cost is $250 per golfer. Inn hosts ‘bake-off’ The Ho-Ho-Kus Inn & Tavern hosted the First Annual Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary Bake-Off Contest, which brought together women from the fire department auxiliaries of Ho-Ho-Kus, Wyckoff, Waldwick, and Mahwah -- and their pies, cakes and other sweet treats for judging by a panel of judges, including Ho-Ho-Kus Mayor Tom Randall, Wyckoff Mayor Kevin Rooney, Mahwah Councilman John Roth, Marisa Sandora of Bergen Health & Life magazine, food and recipe blogger Kate Morgan Jackson, and local wine importer and restaurant consultant Alex Berlingeri. Proceeds from the bake-off, including the pre-sale of a commemorative cookbook, will benefit a fire relief charity.
