Animal shelter offers obedience classes The Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, Inc. will offer basic and advanced obedience group classes at the VFW Hall in Franklin Lakes on Thursday evenings. Registration is under way for a basic obedience class at 6 p.m. and an advanced class at 7:20 p.m. Classes will begin June 30. Space is limited. The fee is $145 or $130 for RBARI alumni. Summer reading club begins The Franklin Lakes Library’s Summer Reading Club, “One World, Many Stories,” will begin June 21 and run through Aug. 13. There will be a Kick-off Party with rock band Starfish, on June 29. Sign up for both the reading and the concert has begun. The club is open to readers and pre-readers of all ages who live in Franklin Lakes. Each week, participants will present a log of books read to the children’s department at the library. Children may win prizes and receive an invitation to the “One World, Many Stories” Celebration on Wednesday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. starring “One Man Sideshow” David Smith. In preparation for the summer reading program, children in kindergarten through grade three are invited to decorate their own suitcase, hear travel stories, and make a treat to eat on Tuesday, June 28 at 2:30 p.m. at the library. Summer camp, Safety Town set The Wyckoff Family YMCA will host a summer recreation camp for Franklin Lakes children in kindergarten through grade eight. Five week-long sessions will run June 27 through July 29 (no camp July 4) at $95 per week. Junior Camp, for children in kindergarten through grade four, will be located at High Mountain Road School. Senior Camp, for children in grades five through eight, will be held at Woodside School. This year’s theme is “Road Trip USA.” Campers will participate in sports, games, arts and crafts, on-site entertainment, off-site trips, water fun, and more. The Y will offer Safety Town for Franklin Lakes children who will be entering kindergarten in September. This camp teaches community safety and features lessons from community helpers, including representatives of the Franklin Lakes Police Department, ambulance corps, and fire department. The children are taught safe practices regarding strangers, pedestrian and traffic safety, poisons, bicycles, riding school buses, and water safety -- which is
taught at the Y’s Spring Lake. Snacks will be provided, and the program will be held rain or shine at High Mountain Road School, July 11 through 21 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The cost is $110. Registration forms for Safety Town and the summer camp programs are available at the Wyckoff YMCA, 691 Wyckoff Avenue in Wyckoff and at the Franklin Lakes Recreation Office, 1 Vichiconti Way in Franklin Lakes. Register for ‘Splash and Dash’ The Second Annual Franklin Lakes Youth “Splash and Dash” Biathlon will be held on Sept. 10 at 8 a.m. Athletes, ages seven through 16, will compete in the swim/run event held at The Indian Trail Club at 830 Franklin Lake Road. The race is designed to promote health and wellness for children and is sponsored by The Franklin Lakes Recreation and Parks Department and the Wyckoff Family YMCA with the support of the Franklin Lakes Mayor’s Wellness Campaign and the Indian Trail Club. Four age groups will compete as follows: those age eight and under will complete a 75-yard pool swim and one-mile run; those who are nine to 11 will swim 200 yards in the pool and run two miles; competitors who are 12 to 14 will swim 400 yards in the lake and run 2.5 miles; and those who are 15 and 16 will swim 600 yards in the lake and run three miles. All participants will receive a T-shirt. Prizes will be awarded to the top three competitors in each age category and to the top three relay teams. Fees are $50 per individual, and $65 for relay teams. The race is limited to 150 participants. Sponsorship opportunities are available. Trevor Romano of Franklin Lakes, a freshman at Tuxedo Park School, has received the Lorillard Cup. The award, named after Tuxedo Park’s founder Pierre Lorillard, recognizes the best overall male athlete in Tuxedo Park School who exhibits outstanding athleticism, sportsmanship, and loyalty to athletics. Romano was elected by his teammates to be a captain all three sports seasons. He led the tennis team, squash team, and the undefeated boys’ lacrosse team. Romano’s name will be engraved on both a silver cup and on a plaque alongside the names of the award recipients since the award was established in 1942. He attend Seton Hall Prep next year. Allan to exhibit Artist Linda Allan of West Nyack, New York, will exhibit her artwork at the Franklin Lakes Public Library during the month of July. Allan works in oil, colored pencil, and acrylics. She has exhibited in the Arts Alliance of Rockland, various libraries in New York, and the Rockland Center for the Arts. She recently participated in a juried exhibit at the Ridgewood Art Institute. Board of education plans meeting The Franklin Lakes Board of Education will meet June 21 at 8 p.m. The meeting will be held in the music room of the Franklin Lakes Middle School, 755 Franklin Avenue.
