Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • June 15, 2011 FLOW Area RIH trustees to undergo background checks by Frank J. McMahon At last week’s Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Lauren Schoen asked all the trustees to submit to being fingerprinted as part of a background check now required by state law signed by Governor Chris Christie. In addition to the criminal history background investigation requirement, the law disqualifies a person from serving as a member of a board of education or a member of a charter school board of trustees if they have been convicted of certain crimes. Those crimes include any offense involving the manufacture, transportation, sale, possession, distribution, or habitual use of a controlled substance; luring a child; robbery; burglary; terroristic threats; bias intimidation; and aggravated assault. School board members must undergo the criminal history background investigation within 30 days of being elected or appointed to the school board, or 30 days from the effective date of the law for current board members. Once the background check is completed, it will be sent to the commissioner of education who will notify any board member who has a disqualifying conviction. The law was originally passed by both houses of the legislature in February, but it was conditionally vetoed by Governor Christie who recommended that bias intimidation and fourth degree crimes involving minors be added to the law as additional grounds for disqualification. Schoen advised the board that all trustees will be reimbursed for the cost of the fingerprinting and background checks. There will be two Wyckoff Community Blood Drives in June.
