Opera Company holds auditions Opera 691, the Wyckoff Y’s Opera Company, will hold auditions for “The Barber of Seville,” on Monday, June 20 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Y, 691 Wyckoff Avenue in Wyckoff. Summer Reading Club to begin Readers ranging from the “read-to-me” age to grade six are invited to travel the seven continents through the Wyckoff Library’s Summer Reading Club, “One World, Many Stories.” Registration will begin Friday, June 24 at the library’s temporary location, 637 Wyckoff Avenue. Events planned for the summer include magic, music, juggling, theater, art workshops, food, games, and prizes. The first program, Mr. Fish’s Super Scientific Circus, the Science of Magic, will be held June 29 at 2 p.m. Registration is required. Job seekers invited to program Wyckoff resident Janine Swenson will offer a handson June 14 presentation for job seekers at the Wyckoff Public Library. Swenson is a product marketing manager with LearningExpress, LCC for Job & Career Accelerator ™. Job & Career Accelerator, an online job and career resource, is free through the library’s website, http://wyckofflibrary.org. The presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m. and run approximately two hours. Job & Career Accelerator is a 2011 CODiE Awardswinning database for job hunters. It is part of the online resources platform available through LearningExpress, purchased last year for New Jersey libraries by the New Jersey State Library. With Job & Career Accelerator, job seekers can choose to explore occupations, search for jobs and internships, create resumes, and practice interviewing and networking. To begin, a user should enter his or her Wyckoff library card number as the user name. The library has a limited number of Internet computers while in its temporary space. Library open additional hours The Wyckoff Library, now located at its temporary site at 637 Wyckoff Avenue, is adding evening hours to its weekly schedule. Beginning June 9, hours will be Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday
from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. As of June 18, the library will be closed on Saturdays for the summer. Saturday hours will resume after Labor Day. The Wyckoff Library facility at 200 Woodland Avenue is undergoing construction, which is expected to last about one year. The project began in March and will include an enlarged children’s department and a renovation of the public spaces in the library. New construction photos are being posted monthly so residents can follow the building project’s progress. Seniors plan trips The Wyckoff Seniors will host a trip to the Hunterdon Playhouse for a luncheon and the musical revue, “Unforgettable,” on July 14. Other upcoming events for the seniors are the excursion to Doolan’s in Spring Lake for lunch and a show on June 14; and a four-night trip to the Indian Head Resort in New Hampshire planned for Sept. 12 through 16. The Wyckoff Seniors group meets every Tuesday at 11:15 at the Larkin House at 380 Godwin Avenue. Golf Outing to benefit Billy’s Buddies The Wyckoff Family YMCA will host a Golf Outing to benefit its programs for children with Down syndrome and their families on Wednesday, July 13 at Ballyowen Golf Club in Hamburg. The event will include breakfast, morning and afternoon rounds of golf, lunch, prizes, contests, an auction, cocktail hour and hors d’oeuvres. The cost is $250 per golfer. Prize donations sought Heritage Manor Nursing Home at Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff is in need of bingo prizes for resident activity sessions. Items requested include, small picture frames, note cards and stationery, crossword puzzle and word-find books, socks, scarves, ties, costume jewelry (necklaces, clip-on earrings, pins) and other knickknacks. Items are also needed for a reminiscing activity for residents. Items requested include anything antique or oldfashioned, such as clothes pins, glove stretchers, and vintage kitchenware. After raising seven children and teaching school, PetkusMason began painting in watercolors, a life-long ambition. She has been working for the past seven years under the instruction of Joel Popadics at the Ridgewood Art Institute. Petkus-Mason has shown her work at the Ridgewood Art Institute, Art Center of Northern New Jersey in Milford, the Wyckoff Y Arts Shows, and Jane Law’s Gallery. Through her paintings, she has shared her love of animals, flowers, and landscapes from the many travels taken with her husband, and homes and lighthouses. The exhibit is open to the public during normal business hours and all works are available for purchase. Proceeds benefit the Wyckoff Family YMCA. The Y is located at 681 Wyckoff Avenue. Art supply donations sought The Longview Assisted Living Residence at the Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff is planning a centennial celebration with its Second Annual Art Exhibit in September. Longview is seeking donations of art supplies including canvases, paint paper, foam boards, acrylic paints, watercolor paints, colored pencils, pastels, stamps/ink, airdry clay, and brushes. The event will showcase the residents’ artwork throughout the year. The elderly, especially those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, often find that art therapy is a great tool for expression. Musician sought for Sunday services The Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff is seeking volunteers to play the piano for Sunday worship services at CHCC. Interested candidates can be high school students or older and should have a medium level of accomplishment. Experience playing hymns is a plus. Hour-long services are held at 10 a.m., 2 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. One can volunteer for any of these times on a regular or occasional basis. Wyckoff Y offers cookbook “Recipes and Remembrances” a new cookbook compiled by YMCA staff, members, and friends is available for sale at the Wyckoff YMCA for $8. The book is filled with ideas for appetizers, dinners, and desserts, and makes a great gift. All proceeds benefit the Wyckoff YMCA Scholarship Fund.
