June 15, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 19 This spring, three public events were conducted by the Wyckoff Shade Tree Commission, the Wyckoff Environmental Commission, and the Wyckoff Police Department’s detective bureau. For the fifth consecutive year, the Shade Tree Commission planted trees to celebrate Arbor Day. This year’s efforts included planting 12 trees in the municipal right-ofway on Monroe Avenue to replant areas to continue and enhance the tree canopy that exists on Monroe Avenue. The second phase of reforesting the willow trees that previously existed along Zabriskie Pond before they were damaged by storms was performed. Three willow trees were planted across from the three willows planted in 2010 to ring the pond. The willow trees were again donated by Nelson Lee of Landscapeworks, Inc. Greenstar Recycling provided a vehicle from All Shred Service that shredded documents. Residents drove to the front of Wyckoff Town Hall and deposited their personal documents in 50 gallon plastic containers on wheels, which were lifted by conveyor belt and dumped into the shredding chute. A video display allowed residents to witness the shredding of their documents. Approximately 300 residents delivered documents which resulted in 6,640 pounds of shredded paper. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, for every ton of paper that is recycled and re-directed into post consumer production, 17 trees are allowed to grow and are not required as raw material for the production of new paper. Using this statistic, the recent recycling of personal documents resulted in 6,640 pounds of shredded paper -- and 56 trees conserved. The Wyckoff Environmental Commission is planning another town-wide document shredding for the fall. Residents are asked to register their e-mail addresses at “site registration” on the homepage of wyckoff-nj.com for details. Residents who attended received tree saplings donated by Rockland Electric Company and Nifty Fifty stickers. The Nifty Fifty program encourages residents to reduce their household garbage by identifying recyclables to place in the township’s curbside collection, which is provided every other week. For the third time, the Wyckoff Police Department participated in the Drug Enforcement Agency’s program, which allows residents to drop off unused or expired prescription medications at the Wyckoff Police Department. Fifty-six residents delivered 43 pounds of medicine, which will be incinerated by the DEA. Wyckoff Sale Days June 16-17-18 Township of Wyckoff goes green for Arbor Day During the three recent collections, the police have collected a total of 112 pounds of medicine. The Wyckoff Township Committee extends its thanks to the Wyckoff Environmental Commission, the Wyckoff Shade Tree Commission, and the residents who participated in this year’s Arbor Day events. The governing body requests that residents continue to recycle and participate in the Nifty Fifty program.
