Wyckoff residents Suse F. Bell and Miles E.A. Everson recently received the Silver Beaver Award from the Northern New Jersey Council of Boy Scouts of America at the council’s annual awards dinner held at the Westmont Country Club in Woodland Park. The award, established in 1931, is the highest honor a registered adult leader can receive. The Silver Beaver is presented to individuals who do not actively seek recognition, but work diligently, showing self-sacrifice, exceptional character, and dedication. Bell grew up in a Scouting family in Indiana. Her association with Scouting began first as a Girl Scout, where she enjoyed six years of Brownies, Juniors, and Cadettes. Her younger brother is an Eagle Scout, a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow, and was a blacksmith at Philmont Scout Ranch for six years. As the mother of three boys - ages 13, 16, and 24, Bell knew she would be involved in Scouting as soon as her sons became Tigers. Along with her husband Colin, Bell has lived in Wyckoff for 16 years. For the last 15 years, she has worked with Wyckoff’s Troop 89. She has served as an assistant Scoutmaster, outings coordinator, and Scoutmaster. She is also a merit badge counselor, summer camp leader, and Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow. She has participated in several Philmont treks as a crew member and as a council contingent leader. At the 2001 Jamboree, Bell was second assistant and served as a Scoutmaster during the 2010 Centennial Jamboree. She has served on the Iaoapogh Mountains District Committee as a member-at-large and served as a member of the District Training Committee. Bell worked with Pack 198 in Wyckoff for nine years. Her Cub Scout experience includes serving in positions of committee chair, den leader, Webelos Den Leader, and advancement chair. As a member of the Fox Patrol, Bell has both taken and staffed Woodbadge. In September, she will attend the Philmont Leadership Challenge. Along with hiking, she enjoys backpacking and has trekked the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Denali, Philmont, the White Mountains, the Appalachian Trial, and the Long Trail. Bell is active in the Wyckoff Historical Society, New York-New Jersey Trail Conference Publications Committee, Appalachian Trail Maintainer, and Wyckoff Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Company #1, where she is treasurer. Everson became a Cub Scout in 1972 when he joined Pack 138 in Jamestown, North Dakota. He earned the Arrow of Light and joined Troop 145.
