Page 30 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • June 8, 2011 DVDs (continued from Restaurant page) first time on DVD. In this 1933 movie, starring John Barrymore, Helen Hayes, Clark Gable, Lionel Barrymore, Robert Montgomery, and Myrna Loy, MGM attempted to duplicate its formula for “Grand Hotel” and “Dinner at Eight” by packing in an impressive roster of stars, very unusual in the 1930s. A project of David O. Selznick, the movie was based on a novel by French airmail pilot Antoine de SaintExupery. Polio breaks out in Rio de Janeiro, the medicine is in Santiago, and there is only one way to get it where it is desperately needed. Daring pilots risk the treacherous weather and the forbidding peaks of the Andes to fly the cure from Santiago to Rio. To personalize the story, one particular child in Rio is the focus. John Barrymore is powerful as Riviere, the manager of the company running the mail planes. He is a strict disciplinarian whose goal is to make night flights successful. Gable and Montgomery star as fliers, but the aviation footage is the film’s best aspect, with exciting nighttime flights and a dramatic storm sequence set above the Andes. There are two extras on this DVD release: a vintage Sports Champions series short, “Swing High,” and the classic cartoon “When the Cat’s Away.” “Salt of This Sea” (Lorber Films) is a portrait of life in Palestine. Sixty years after her grandparents’ exile from Jaffa, Soraya discovers that her family’s bank account was frozen after the Arab-Israeli war. She decides to leave Brooklyn for her homeland to reclaim her birthright by whatever means necessary. With the help of her disillusioned lover, Emad, and his filmmaker pal, Marwan, they planFINLEY heist to settle the debt. Driving through the one big FINLEY countryside in a trek suggesting an Arab (though pacifist) Bonnie and Clyde, Soraya and Emad discover their roots while rejecting their status as exiles. The film espouses human rights concerns in the Palestinian territories. The point of view is unmistakably hammered home by Soraya’s treatment as soon as she enters Israel, from a strip search and endless security checks at the airport to physical barriers everywhere she turns that hinder Palestinians with guards, barbed wire, and road blocks. The problem is that, in her passion to emphasize her message, director Annemarie Jacir turns Soraya into a symbolic voice of oppression rather than a real, flesh-andblood character. There are no extras. “Exorcismus” (IFC Films) is a dark tale of demonic possession that combines traditional horror with gripping family drama. Fifteen-year-old Emma (Sophie Vavasseur) is going through the growing pains of teen life, believing her parents don’t understand her and longing for the independence that is still a few years away. Home schooled and socially awkward, Emma begins to have unexplainable convulsions in which she acts out violently and has no memory of the event afterward. The fits become more frequent and potentially dangerous to Emma’s family and friends. When examinations by doctors and psychologists reveal nothing, she turns to an uncle, a priest (Doug Bradley, Pinhead from the “Hellraiser” films) with experience in performing exorcisms. Clearly inspired by “The Exorcist,” “Exorcismus” tries hard to rise to the level of that terrifying 1973 classic, but never approaches its intensity. Director Manual Carballo incorporates lots of atmospheric lighting, quick shocks, rolling eyes, screaming, and heavy-handed music into this unrated movie, but it all seems a formulaic retread.
