McMahon The Ramapo Indian Hills Board of Education recently honored two Ramapo High School champion athletes. Senior Bradley Paternostro was honored for his championship achievements in track, and junior Jonathan Carcione was honored for his championship achievements in tennis. During the 2010-11 school year, Paternostro was the Big North Champion in the 1,600 and 800 meter runs; Bergen County Champion in 1,600 and 800 meter runs; Anchor Leg of County Champion Sprint Medley Relay team; Bergen Meet of Champions runner-up in 800 meters; North 1 Group 3 State Sectional Champion 1,600 meters and runner-up in the 800 meter run; third place in the 400 meter run, which he finished in 48.83; Group 3 State Champion in the 800 meter run, with a time of 1:51.05, the fastest time ever run in a state group championship meet; and, third place in Group 3 in the 1,600 meter run. He was the State Meet of Champions runner-up in record time, and he is on the 2011 First Team All-Big North, and First Team All-County. He was also the anchor of the school record 4 x 400 relay in 3:23.20; the school record holder in the 800 meter run in 1:50.7, which is also the third all-time in Bergen County; the school record holder in the 1,600 meter run in which he broke the 40-year-old record in 4:14.12; and the school record holder in the 400 meter run in 48.83. With a record of 33-0 for the season, Carcione is the Bergen County tennis champion. He won the state’s singles championship this past year, beating the returning champion Michael Lippens of Shore Regional High School in straight sets to win his first state title. He has a career record of 95-2, and has won the North Jersey Player of the Year award in boys’ tennis for the second year in a row. Carcione was ranked 42nd in the nation, and was chosen as a high school All-American athlete. “We’re happy to have him on our team and we look forward to his leadership next year,” said his coach, Kim Marchese. Ramapo High School competes in the North Bergen Interscholastic Athletic League. Ramapo’s sports teams, nicknamed the “Raiders,” and the school’s individual athletes have a rich history of athletic success. According to a recently updated report on the high school by Wikipedia, some of those successes include the state individual fencing champion Adrian Bak, who in 2009 was a member of the national fencing team and led Ramapo to a team saber state title; and Charles Copti,who in 2011 continued the trend and went on to win the state individual saber championship. The 2009 wrestling team won its first league title in program history by defeating Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan in a 28-28 tie. The tie was broken from the “Second Tie Breaking Criteria: Most Matches Won.” Ramapo had eight wins, while Northern Valley-Old Tappan had six. The wrestling team won the title for its division in the league the following year also, and there are currently four wrestlers who are part of the 100 Win Club. They include 2005 graduate Jimmy Schulz, 2009 graduate Chris D’Amico, 2010 graduate Alex Scheinert, and 2011 graduate Nick Madormo. The 2009 football team won the New Jersey Group 3 State Championship, beating arch rival Wayne Hills High School 16-8 at Giants Stadium, for the team’s first title since 2003. The 2009-10 Spring Track Boys Sprint Medley Team placed first overall in the Bergen County Relays in Division A, posting the 19th fastest time ever run in the county with a 3:32.7 and a 1:53 800 anchor leg by Paternostro, who was a junior at the time. Pasternostro was awarded the Bernard Smith Award for the Best Male Track Athlete of the meet. The 2010 Boys Golf Team won a State Group III Championship and the 2010 Boys Cross Country Team won league (continued on page 19)
