PBA files grievance over free ammunition cutoff
by John Koster An attempt to eliminate hand-outs of free ammunition for police officers’ personal firearms led to a grievance procedure from the Wyckoff PBA against Chief Benjamin Fox, and support from the Wyckoff Township Committee for Chief Fox’s cost-cutting measure. “As far as I’m concerned, in these extraordinary economic and budgetary times, the policy of distributing free ammunition to officers for their own personal handguns, which they are not legally required to own, is a perk that had to be eliminated,” Chief Fox said last week. “It’s a very small cost of the individual police officer, it’s not a legal requirement, and it’s utterly irresponsible in times like these to think that this policy would continue through eternity.” The grievance filed by PBA President 262 President Mark Tagliareni on Jan. 15 stated that Wyckoff had violated a condition of employment with a memorandum issued to Police Sergeant Dale Winters on Jan. 6. “The memorandum changes existing department practice by requiring employees to purchase their own ammunition for use in qualification with off-duty weapons,” Patrolman Tagliarini wrote to Chief Fox. “Prior to this policy, ammunition for use in qualifications with offduty weapons was provided to employees by the department without any action by the employee at the sole cost of the department. Said ammunition was also provided to employees by the department for carrying the weapons
while off-duty.” Tagliarini was unavailable for further comment. The Wyckoff Township Committee was informed about Chief Fox’s decision to eliminate the free distribution of ammunition at the work session before the Jan. 18 public meeting. The committee members substantially concurred with the decision, which had followed Township Administrator Robert Shannon’s request to all department heads to single out any expenses that could be eliminated from the proposed 2011 budget. “We’re trying to look into every nook and cranny to see where we can capture some savings, if possible,” Shannon told the committeemen at the work session. “I think the chief’s original decision to remove this (continued on page 15)

Police halt burglar and accomplice
The Wyckoff Police Department put an experienced burglar and his accomplice behind bars on Jan. 14 when the Morristown man tried to smash in a Wyckoff woman’s back door with a rock. The 38-year-old accused burglar and the 36-year-old Wayne woman who was reportedly driving for him were remanded to Bergen County Jail after a search in which Midland Park and Franklin Lakes police assisted the Wyckoff Department. Bail for the man was set at $25,000 and at $10,000 for the woman. Wyckoff police received a call from a Caldwell Drive resident at 11:10 a.m. on Jan. 14. The woman told police someone was trying to break into her house. She had heard her doorbell ring, but was unable to answer immediately. When she came downstairs to respond to the doorbell, she heard sounds of someone trying to smash into the back door with a rock. The burglar fled when he realized someone was at home. Police began to search the vicinity. About 10 minutes after the break-in attempt, Detective Michael Musto observed a man leaving a yard near another Caldwell Drive house near the intersection of Cedar Hill Drive. The man was getting into a vehicle driven by a woman who had stopped to pick him up. Police stopped the vehicle and charged the man and the woman with one count of burglary each. Police report that the man has an extensive criminal record and had an active warrant from Somerset County for burglary. Lieutenant Charles Van Dyk, Lieutenant David Murphy, Sergeant Dale Winters, Sergeant Joseph Soto, Patrolman Andrew Poremba, and Patrolman Kevin Pinches took part in the investigation along with officers from Franklin Lakes and Midland Park.
