Adolph “Sonny” Santorine, who developed Midland Park High School’s sports program as the school’s first athletic director over a half century ago, has been selected for induction into the Directors of Athletics Association of New Jersey Hall of Fame, Class of 2011. “ Your outstanding achievements, dedication to studentathletes and professionalism throughout your career as an athletic administrator have led to this highest acknowledgement by the DAANJ,” wrote Denis Nelson, chairman of the selection committee.
‘Sonny’ Santorine selected for state AD Hall of Fame
The association already awards two annual scholarships statewide in Santorine’s name. “I am happy to receive this honor not only for myself, but also for the youth and parents of Midland Park. They helped me to get this honor. It puts the icing on the cake,” Santorine said. His wife of 53 years, Helen, said that another aspect of Santorine’s career that may have contributed to his nomination to the Hall of Fame is his famed scheduling program, used by athletic directors throughout the country
Midland Park has submitted a preliminary damage assessment to the Bergen County Office of Emergency Management and is awaiting action from Washington on reimbursement of snow removal costs associated with the blizzard the blanketed the region shortly after Christmas. According to Midland Park Emergency Management Coordinator Jeff Allyn, the borough’s emergency management team worked quickly to get the numbers together for this storm which resulted in an Emergency Declaration by the Governor’s Office.
Town seeks help with December blizzard costs
“When and if Washington issues a confirmation of the emergency, the MPOEM will work with FEMA to get any available Federal Emergency Management Act funds,” Allyn said. The borough was fortunate in being reimbursed for the March 2010 storm damage through FEMA, the check for which arrived just two weeks ago. Through great effort by DPW supervisor Rudy Gnehm, Police Chief John Casson and Financial Assistant Laurie O’Hanlon, Allyn was able to work with FEMA to get reimbursement of over $14,000 for that storm.
since 1964 as a manual tool in managing their sports programs long before the popular use of computers and the internet. The Santorines sold the program and the website that it spawned, www.highschoolsports.net, to USA Today three years ago. Santorine came to the Midland Park School District before the high school opened in 1955 to set up the sports/ physical education programs, retiring in 1984. As head football coach from the start, he headed the football program for 23 years, and served as head baseball coach for 20 years and head basketball coach for ten. During his 29yer tenure, he garnered many prestigious state and county awards, and the Midland Park Board of Education named the high school athletic field in his honor in 1988. He was inducted into the Midland Park Education Hall of Fame last spring, only the third former educator in the district to receive the honor. His photograph is displayed in the Education Hallway of Fame at the school. The award presentation will be made at the DAANJ Annual Workshop at the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino on Wednesday, March 16 in Atlantic City.
