Tom Grunick (William Hurt), with good looks and questionable ethics, always looks cool and collected on camera no matter how tense the situation. Made in 1987, this film is especially timely now since it deals with the decline of the great network news organizations, the relaxation of journalistic ethics, and huge reductions in network news bureaus. Much of what is foretold in “Broadcast News” has become reality. The movie includes wit, humor, and sharp dialogue. Hunter has never had a better role, and Brooks comes off as a kind of unsung hero rather than the whiny nerd he portrays in other movies. The two-disc DVD edition contains a restored, highdefinition digital transfer, audio commentary by director Brooks, a new documentary on Brooks’ career in TV and film, an alternate ending, deleted scenes, an interview with the CBS news producer who was the inspiration for Hunter’s character, and a booklet with a critical essay on the movie. A single-disc Blu-ray edition, containing all the extras, is also available. “Zorro: The Complete Series” (A&E Entertainment) is a 15-disc box set containing all 88 episodes of a series that ran from 1990 to 1993. (Note: This is not the Disney “Zorro” featuring Guy Williams.) Filmed in Madrid, this show takes place in the early 1800s, when Los Angeles was the farthest colonial outpost of the Spanish empire, governed by a corrupt mayor. Young Don Diego de la Vega (Duncan Regehr), FINLEY FINLEY pretending to care only for science and study, secretly creates a bold alter-ego: Zorro: The Fox. Assisted by his mute servant, Felipe (Juan Diego Botto), Zorro, with his whip and trusty steed, Tornado, defends the innocent and instills fear among the guilty. Guest stars include Daniel Craig, Pete Postlethwaite, Adam West, Andre the Giant, Philip Michael Thomas, and Jesse Ventura. Bonus features in this boxed set include the feature film “The Mark of Zorro,” Chapter I of the 1939 serial “Zorro’s Fighting Legion,” trailers for three Zorro serials, the neverbefore-released pilot for “The New World of Zorro,” and a photo gallery from that film. “Stone” (Anchor Bay Entertainment) is a thriller with an impressive cast. Jack Mabry (Robert De Niro), a parole officer who is days away from retirement, is asked to review the case of Gerald “Stone” Creeson (Edward Norton) in prison for arson. Now eligible for early release, Stone needs to convince Jack he has reformed, but his attempts to use his wife Lucetta (Milla Jovovich) to influence the older man’s decision have unexpected effects. Stone finds prison life unbearable and contemplates suicide until he embraces a religion that includes meditation. Stone finds peace and a new perspective on life that threatens both Jack and Lucetta. This intriguing psychological thriller is shored up by the performances of Norton and Jovovich. De Niro walks through the movie looking as if he is functioning on one cylinder. It is a disappointing performance from a fine actor. Director John Curran introduces fascinating philosophical issues and a few unexpected twists. For a lowbudget flick, “Stone” is impressive.
