Children and adults are invited to learn the basics of guitar. Guitar classes are offered on Thursdays. Children eight through 12 meet from 4 to 5 p.m.; students 13 through 17 from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m.; and adult beginners from 7 to 8 p.m. Children are also invited to challenge their Lego construction skills as they build cranes, tractors, and merrygo-rounds. Lego classes for children age six through 10, meet on Tuesdays from Feb. 1 through March 15 from 4 to 5 p.m. or 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. These classes are $125 each and will be held at the Franklin Lakes Recreation Center. Schmidt named to Dean’s List Shayna Schmidt, daughter of Linda and Ronald Schmidt of Franklin Lakes, has been named to the Dean’s List at Hamilton College for the 2010 fall semester. Schmidt, a junior majoring in theater, is a graduate of Montclair Kimberley Academy. To qualify for this honor, a student must achieve a grade point average of 90 or above during the term. Magic workshop offered Children in grades three through six are invited to a magic workshop on Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 4 p.m. Participants will watch a demonstration by a professional magician, and learn a few tricks. Library hosts valentine craft workshops Local artist Jacque Benevento will present Valentine craft workshops for children at the Franklin Lakes Public Library, 470 DeKorte Drive. Two sessions will be offered. Session One, for children in kindergarten through grade three, will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 4:15 p.m. Session Two, for children in grades four through seven, will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 4:15 p.m. Registration is required, and space is limited. Women’s Bible Study announced The Franklin Lakes Baptist Church will offer a Bible Study for women on Tuesdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. “Loving God with all Your Mind” is a 14-week study that will be held at the church, 649 Franklin Avenue. Pianist to perform at Café Chabad The Chabad Jewish Center invites the community to enjoy the company of friends, an open bar, buffet dinner, and the music, humor, and inspiration of Canadian virtuoso pianist Gershon Wachtel on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m. Gershon’s world-class repertoire of classical, Broadway, and Jewish music is interspersed with a moving and entertaining talk about his life’s journey and painful challenges. Gershon holds a master’s degree in piano performance from New York University and has performed in virtually every major city in North America and Europe. Twice, he was chosen to accompany the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics team to the Olympics and he has been featured on CBC and CBS radio and NBC TV. The event will be held at a private residence in Wyckoff. Meetings focus on healthy lifestyles The Franklin Lakes Branch of The Valley Hospital Auxiliary has planned two programs that focus on a healthy lifestyle. On Monday, Feb. 28, a representative of The Valley Hospital Speaker’s Bureau will discuss “Strong Bones for a Lifetime.” This session will be held at the Franklin Lakes Public Library, DeKorte Drive, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Ellen Cramer, registered dietitian, will present “Reading Food Labels & Healthy Snacking” on Monday, March 21. This meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Franklin Lakes Ambulance Corps Building at Bender Court and Municipal Drive. Regular meetings of the Franklin Lakes Branch of The Valley Hospital Auxiliary are open to all auxiliary members and those interested in joining branch. Recreation offers men’s softball league Registration for the Franklin Lakes Recreation Men’s Softball League will be held Feb. 1 through March 15. The cost of registration is $800 per team. Teen Poetry Contest announced Franklin Lakes Public Library will sponsor a Teen Poetry Contest during National Library Week 2011 and National Poetry Month. All writers in grade six through 12 are invited to create an original poem or song lyrics of 250 words or less. Submissions are due on or before Monday, April 4, 2011. There is a limit of two submissions per person. All students who live in Franklin Lakes, or attend school in Franklin Lakes (including Indian Hills and Ramapo High Schools), are welcome to participate. Entries will be judged on creativity, clarity, polish, and overall impact. Winners will be announced during National Library Week, April 10 through 16.
