Republicans to meet The Franklin Lakes Republican Club will meet on Jan. 17 at 7:45 p.m. at the Bender Court Ambulance Corp Building to discuss the election of officers for 2011. Mayor Bivona and the council will review their plans for 2011 and the open committee positions. The Franklin Lakes Republican Club is a non-profit organization established to represent the Republican Party in the borough. It is devoted to the cause of community improvement and good government through the medium of an organized Republican Party and the support of candidates for public office who will best represent the interests of the residents and taxpayers of Franklin Lakes. Merliss offers music for children Singer and songwriter Teri Merliss will offer a music program for children ages three and up on Fridays, Feb. 4, 11, and 18 and March 4 from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at the Franklin Lakes Public Library. Attendees will hear imaginative stories, and have an opportunity to sing original songs while using instruments. Space is limited and registration is required. Franklin Lakes residents may begin to register on Jan. 18; non residents may begin to register on Jan. 27. Temple to host ‘Concert for Darfur’ Peace through Music: A Concert for Darfur, will take place Jan. 29 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Barnert Temple, 747 Route 208 South in Franklin Lakes. The coffee-house style acoustic concert will feature amateurs and professionals of all ages. The event will
include prize baskets and contests. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under age 13, and may be purchased at the door or in advance. Kindergarten registration announced The Franklin Lakes Public Schools will hold kindergarten registration Jan. 25 through 28 from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. Parents of students who will enter kindergarten in September 2011 may register their children at their school of attendance: Colonial Road School at 749 Colonial Road, High Mountain Road School at 765 High Mountain Road, or Woodside Avenue School at 305 Woodside Avenue. To verify a child’s school of attendance, call the board of education at (201) 891-1856. Children are eligible for the kindergarten class in September 2011 if they were born on or before Oct. 1, 2006. Children do not have to be present during registration. An orientation program will be scheduled for May, and parents will schedule an appointment for their child to participate in a screening activity to help determine kindergarten readiness. Fitness workshop offered The Franklin Lakes Public Library will offer a program of fitness and weight loss on Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. All are welcome to attend this unique presentation and learn the secrets to a successful New Year’s fitness resolution. Hope Weissberg and John De Palma of Tip Top Athletics will offer tips on adjusting attitude, changing one’s lifestyle, and developing a plan for success. All are welcome

Beginners welcome to computer class Franklin Lakes Public Library will offer a basic computer and Internet class in a four-part series to be held Jan. 12, 14, 19, and 21. Topics will include the mouse and keyboard, Windows desktop, Internet terminology and navigation, and search techniques on Google and in various simple databases. Participants must be able to commit to all four classes. This is an elementary class and no experience is necessary. Register at the adult reference desk or call (201) 891-2224. Learn about paying for college Joshua Marber, MS.Ed., a professional with over 10 years of experience in the education, counseling, and college fields, will visit the Franklin Lakes Library on Jan. 20 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to advise teens and their families about the college admission process. Travel baseball teams hold tryouts The Franklin Lakes War Eagles will hold tryouts for the travel baseball season on Saturday, Jan. 22 at Teel’s Baseball School, 445 Braen Avenue, Wyckoff. Players will be evaluated on their hitting, fielding, throwing, and running skills. Players trying out for the 8U team will meet from 2:30 to 4 p.m.; the 9U team, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.; the 10U team, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.; and the 11U and 12 U from 7 to 9 p.m. To register to try out, call (201) 847-8200.
