Traveling softball registration extended The Wyckoff Recreation and Parks Department has extended its deadline for registration for its select traveling softball teams. All girls ages nine through 14 as of Jan. 1, 2011 who wish to try out for one of the traveling teams must register at the recreation office by Jan. 14 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Registration is open to Wyckoff residents only. Teams will be formed at the U10, U12, and U14 levels. A copy of the registrant’s birth certificate is required when registering. Only those players who register during the above time period will be contacted regarding tryout dates. The summer travel softball program begins practicing shortly after tryouts and will play games from mid-June through July. Free Rabies Clinic set Wyckoff dog and cat owners may bring their pets to the free Rabies Clinic on Saturday, Jan. 15 at the Wyckoff Department of Public Works Garage at 475 West Main Street. Hours will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Dogs must be escorted on leashes and cats must be in cat carriers. Licensing will be provided in conjunction with the free rabies vaccines. The license fee is $11 for a spayed or neutered pet and $14 for an unaltered pet. A late charge of $10 will be levied against anyone who had not licensed his or her dog or cat by Feb. 1. The snow date for the clinic will be Jan. 22. Local sponsors sought The athletic department at Ramapo High School is seeking community sponsors for its sports poster program. Funds raised by the sale of the posters will benefit the athletic departments at the high school. All American Sports Posters has been contracted to produce the posters. Temple launches membership campaign Temple Beth Rishon’s “Half off Dues” membership campaign is being held for new members now through April 30. Temple Beth Rishon, serving Northwest Bergen County,

Wyckoff Y plans art exhibits Two exhibitions will be on display at The Wyckoff Family YMCA will offer two art exhibits during the months of January and February. Anne Carney will present her “Shadow” series through Feb. 3. Her exhibit features silver gelatin prints made from black and white film and hand processed in a darkroom. The stark beauty and simplicity of design in black and white photography, was inspired by film noir, and this is especially apparent in this series. “It Happened One Night,” a show comprised of works by a group of masters of fine arts candidates at William Paterson University, will be on display Feb. 5 through March 3. All the artists represented in this exhibit are friends and share studio space. They collectively decided to put a show together for local venues. All the artists’ work in this exhibit is geared toward capturing a moment. Exhibited artwork will be available for sale. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Wyckoff YMCA. Wyckoff Y holds annual meeting The Wyckoff Family YMCA will hold its Annual Board Meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 8 a.m. in Y’s Performing Arts Center at 691 Wyckoff Avenue, Wyckoff. The highlight of the meeting will be the launch of the Y’s new Strong Kids Campaign for 2011. The meeting agenda will also include an overview of missions and goals for the coming year, a review of the successes of the Y’s community partnerships, the swearing in of officers, and election of board members for a three-year term. A light breakfast will be served. The public is invited to attend. ‘Palette to Palate’ tickets available Wyckoff YMCA and Wyckoff Chamber of Commerce will present the second annual “Palette to Palate” event on Friday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Wyckoff Family YMCA, 691 Wyckoff Avenue in Wyckoff. Attendees may spend the evening tasting specialties from local restaurants, caterers, and markets of Wyckoff. Purchase a glass of wine and order bottles to take home. The event will feature an art show and prize baskets that will include art, jewelry, pottery, and sculpture created by
talented local artists. Mary’s Basement will entertain all evening. Tickets are $25 in advance; $30 day of event. Proceeds will benefit the Wyckoff Family YMCA’s Endowment Fund and the Wyckoff Chamber of Commerce College Scholarship Fund. Call (201) 891-2081 for information and tickets. Military Bridge Evening set Coolidge School PTO will host its Military Bridge Evening on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011 at 7 p.m. in the Eisenhower School cafeteria. (Snow date: Jan. 27.) Tickets are $7. Learn about Social Security, getting organized The Friends of the Wyckoff Public Library will offer two programs for adults in the New Year. Social Security representative Dennis Burszan will present a program on Social Security benefits on Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. On Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. Beatrix Goudy, of Let Us Organize You, LLC, will offer tips on organizing a home or office. These programs will be held in the James Monroe Room of the Wyckoff Public Library, 200 Woodland Avenue, and are free and open to the public. Zen center offers winter courses Zen Garland’s Community Study Center and Seminary is inaugurating a Buddhist and Interfaith Chaplaincy and Pastoral Counseling Certification Program. Winter trimester courses will begin Jan. 10. An “End of Life” workshop will be held Feb. 4 through 6. Participants learn how to assist terminally ill family members, friends, and others, and how to prepare for their own late stages of life. The center will offer 12 courses in emotional development, yoga, Aikido, Buddhist studies, ethics, pastoral counseling, and free courses on meditation and spiritual development. Zen Garland was founded by Roshi Paul Genki Kahn, a master teacher in the Soto Zen Buddhist school. He is assisted in teaching at the community by two other lineage holding successors and 20 faculty members.
