ShopRite expert details study; plans for traffic light
by John Koster The Wyckoff Planning Board will conduct additional hearings on the Inserra Supermarkets application for a new ShopRite on the former A&P lot on March 9 and 16. The Feb. 16 hearing slated for last week was cancelled. A traffic study by McDonough & Rea Associates of Westfield on behalf of the applicant showed that the new supermarket would generate 676 vehicle trips during the weekday peak hour and 698 trips during the Saturday peak hour. “Peak hour” is considered to be around the middle of the day. “Detailed field investigations including peak hour demands and patterns, have provided an inventory of existing traffic and roadway conditions in the study area,” said Jay S. Troutman, an engineer and principal of the Westfield-based firm. “The critical hours for analysis of existing and site-generated traffic flows are the weekday afternoon peak hour and Saturday midday peak hour. “Studies indicate many of the site-generated trips come from existing traffic that is already in the area as part of another trip purpose particularly during the weekday afternoon peak.” The driveway access plans include retaining the entryonly driveway from Wyckoff Avenue and reducing the number of driveways from five to three along Greenwood Avenue. “The westerly driveway will primarily accommodate right turns entering the site and left turns exiting the site,” Troutman said. “The central driveway will primarily accommodate left turns entering the site and right turns exiting the site, and the easterly driveway will mainly be utilized by delivery vehicles to exit the site.” He said the proposed design takes into account the surrounding area and its traffic flow, including the neighborhood retail center, while allowing for an even, safer distribution of site vehicles in and out of the proposed parking areas. The proposal also recommends the installation of a traffic signal at the intersection of Wyckoff and Greenwood avenues to improve vehicle delays from a level “F” to a level “C” condition. The level of service roadway capacity, Troutman said, would not generate excessive delays. “Inserra Supermarkets undertook this study to ensure the residents of Wyckoff will be properly served by the proposed ShopRite and has agreed to fund the installation of a new traffic signal, which is subject to the review and approval of the County of Bergen,” said James Jaworski, the attorney representing Inserra. The plans call for a 62,174-aquare-foot supermarket, the demolition of the old Walgreen’s building adjacent to the old A&P, the old A&P, and the nearby 11,700-squarefoot multi-tenant retail center, which accommodated the New Jersey Department of Motor Vehicles office, since closed. The retail space is now vacant, and the A&P and Walgreen’s at the location have been closed for more than a decade.
Firefighters, corps practice ice rescue
(continued from page 6) Approximately 30 firefighters from Wyckoff, six volunteers from the Wyckoff Ambulance Corps, and 30 firefighters from the neighboring municipalities practiced these techniques and procedures from 9:30 am until noon. The Wyckoff Fire Department extends its thanks to township residents who clear snow and ice from the fire hydrants in front of their homes. The residents’ efforts help keep the township safe and allow the fire department’s volunteers to devote their time to fighting fires and participating in training exercises. The Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department is comprised of 100 volunteers who received 140 hours of basic firematic training at the Bergen County Law & Public Safety Institute and continue their training every Monday evening in Wyckoff, where they develop and fine tune skills such as search and rescue, fire suppression, fire attack, fire ground communications, and advanced vehicle rescue techniques. These highly trained and skilled volunteers serve the community by assisting their neighbors in the protection of life and property. This year marks the 104th year that volunteers of the Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department have served the township and its residents.
