Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • February 23, 2011 FLOW Area District recognizes retiring hall of fame coach by Frank J. McMahon A hall of fame baseball coach at Indian Hills High School who has decided to retire on June 30 was recently recognized for his long service to the regional high school district. Hank Reese has been employed by the district for 39 years as a teacher and subject supervisor of health, physical education, and art. During that time, he has also been a baseball coach; a basketball coach; an assistant baseball, basketball, and football coach; and an intramurals coadvisor. The Ramapo Indian Hills Board of Education recently honored Reese for “displaying an unselfish commitment to our children, exemplifying the ideals of professionalism and the standard of excellence.” The board acknowledged Reese for providing exemplary service to the district’s students. Reese was inducted into the New Jersey State Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame and the New Jersey Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004 five years after he stopped coaching in the district to become the subject supervisor in physical education and health. He was inducted into the hall of fame in his first year of eligibility and he was one of only a few coaches inducted at that time from all the high schools in the state. Reese was the Indian Hills baseball coach from 1978 to 1999. His teams won 363 games, nine league championships, three group sectional championships, two Bergen County championships, and made three appearances in the finals of the state championship. Fifty of his players went on to play college level baseball. Reese also coached football for 20 years and he was the school’s head basketball coach from 1976 to 198. His basketball team appeared in the Bergen County Coaches tournament, which then included the 16 top teams in the county. He stopped coaching high school sports when he was promoted to the subject supervisor position in 1999, but he used that opportunity to coach his two sons in recreational football, PAL basketball, and American Legion baseball in Sparta, where he lives. His oldest son played baseball for four years at Fordham University, from which he graduated in 2008 after serving as team captain in his junior and senior years. IHHS Athletic Director Robert Van Saders joined the district during the last year or so of Reese’s coaching career, but has worked with Reese as the subject supervisor of the physical education department. “We’ve worked together well, and he has cooperated with the athletic department, and it has been a good situation,” Van Saders said. Reese credits his success to the help he has received from his assistant coaches. He specifically mentioned William Neal, a former coach and assistant principal; and Joseph Leicht, a current math teacher and head softball team coach. The two men were Reese’s freshman and junior varsity baseball coaches. “I did have a lot of support from the players, their parents, and the community, as well as the administration,” Reese said, “and we were able to do some pretty positive things with our student athletes.” (continued on page 21) Helpful Hints Helpful Hints from ome “To save money, use the self cleaning feature of your oven right after baking and the oven is still hot.” 27 Franklin Tpk, Waldwick Open Sundays 9-3 201-652-5666 Pat Says...
