in Wyckoff, a mental health facility that was a forerunner of the Christian Health Care Center. As soon as she was old enough, she enrolled in the Paterson General Hospital School of Nursing, and graduated in 1941. She completed postgraduate work at the Rubenstein Clinic for Midwifery at Columbia University, where she became a licensed midwife. Turned down as a military nurse during World War II because she had an enlarged heart – which township committee members said was an apt metaphor for her enormous generosity of spirit – she became nursing supervisor of obstetrics and newborns at Paterson General Hospital in 1944, and taught in the nursing school. She enrolled at New York University while employed fulltime, and earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in education and administration. She was named director of nursing at the Christian Sanatorium in 1960, and held the position until 1986, working to improve the housekeeping, hygiene, and education at the facility. She also

founded the de Snoep Winkel Gift Shop and Team Room at the Christian Health Care Center. Taking a special interest in the care of newborns with birth defects, Bushman was instrumental in organizing the Eastern Christian Children’s Retreat for babies and children with special needs. The Bushman Building at the Eastern Christian Children’s Retreat was named in her honor in 2001. Appointed to the Wyckoff Board of Health in1976, Bushman assisted the board with the organization of Wyckoff Meals on Wheels. She helped establish the Florence Christian Home for Unwed Mothers, which is now located in Wayne, and established Sunday school classes at the Christian Sanatorium. In 1995, she was named “Woman of the Year” by the Wyckoff Family YMCA. The members of the Wyckoff Township Committee congratulated Bushman on her achievements, and agreed that she was worthy of the signal honor conferred upon her for long and meritorious service to Wyckoff.
