Applications now being taken for Youth Police Academy
The County of Bergen, Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bergen County Police Department have announced that applications are now being accepted for the Bergen County Youth Police Academy, Class #6. The academy is a two-week “day camp” (Monday through Friday) that is offered free of charge to qualified Bergen County young men and women entering the grades nine through 12. The camp is funded through money forfeited from criminal enterprises. This year’s academy will run from June 27 through July 8. The motto of the Bergen County Youth Police Academy is “Honor – Respect – Commitment.” The objective is to educate the cadets about public service including county government, the judiciary, emergency services, and law enforcement. “Designed by law enforcement professionals, the academy provides high school students with a real understanding of what actual police academy cadets experience,” stated Prosecutor John L. Molinelli. “Strong emphasis is placed on self respect, respect of others, teamwork, and commitment to one’s goals.” The curriculum will consist of hands-on, interactive educational activities and physical training activities. Daily programs include presentations from educators, interaction with county agencies, and field trips. The cadets will be given exposure to available state and county resources. This year’s youth academy will be held at the Bergen County Law & Public Safety Institute in Mahwah. Applications are available at local high schools, police departments, and online at BCPO.net. Forms must be submitted by Friday, May 6. Space is limited. For additional information, contact the Community Outreach Division at (201) 336-3540, or Eileen Hughes at ehughes@bcpo.net.
The Academy of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Franklin Lakes Girl Scout Troop 1202 recently met with the new mayor of Franklin Lakes, Frank Bivona. The mayor was kind enough to take the girls on a tour of the borough hall. He explained to them the duties of the mayor and council. Mayor Bivona introduced the troop to many of the people that are employed by the town. He also explained how the tax dollars are spent in keeping the town running smoothly. The mayor then brought the girls over to have a tour of the Franklin Lakes Police Department. He concluded the tour by answering many of the questions that the girls had about public service.
