Wyckoff
Township now organizing ‘Green Team’ volunteers
by John Koster
The Wyckoff Township Committee has put out the call for volunteers and the governing body will soon be organizing a “Green Team” to implement the goal of preserving the environment and saving taxpayer dollars by enhanced recycling. Prospective team members are urged to make their availability and interest known to Township Clerk Joyce Santimauro. The program known as Sustainable New Jersey was launched across New Jersey two years ago with the support of New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, the New Jersey Office of Smart Growth, and the Rutgers Center for Green Building. So far, 324 municipalities have registered with Sustainable New Jersey and 67 towns have been certified. According to Mayor Kevin Rooney, the Wyckoff Environmental Commission will form the group. The commission is chaired by Harriet Sugarman, with Brian Bigler as the vice chairman. Wyckoff Township Committeeman Thomas Madigan is the committee liaison. The mayor said that, ideally, the new group would include three members of the public, along with the township engineer and the members of the present Wyckoff Environmental Commission. “I want to make sure that we do everything right the first time,” Mayor Rooney said last week. Rooney is a certified expert on trees with extensive experience in fields related to ecology. He said the acceptance of the new members would be based not only on their qualifications but on their availability to attend regular meetings. “I’d like to be a member and I’d like to recommend other members from a broad spectrum of the community,” said Township Committeeman Brian Scanlan, who has long been involved in environmental activities. The goals of the “Green Team” program as expressed
at the state level are: prosperity, meaning the support of the local economy and community resources; planet, meaning responsible environmental management; and people, meaning to embrace social equality and fair-
ness. Priorities include “buy local” campaigns, green construction and design, sustainability planning, saving open spaces, and improving waste management with more recycling and less haulage.
The Wyckoff Police Department has charged two motorists in separate instances with driving while intoxicated and related offenses. On Jan. 26 at 12:14 a.m., Wyckoff police responded to reports of a motor vehicle accident on Route 208 North near Cedar Hall Avenue. Patrolman Brian Zivkovich found a motor vehicle that had been driven off the highway and come to rest atop a snowbank. The 60-yearold Franklin Lakes driver was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. He

was released into the custody of his wife and faces an appearance in municipal court. On Feb. 4 at 1:56 a.m., motorists flagged down a Wyckoff police car and reported that they had been following an erratic driver, who had now reached Radcliff Street. Patrolman Mark Tagliareni stopped and arrested a 24-year-old Wyckoff man who was charged with driving while intoxicated and careless driving. He was released to a friend and faces an appearance in municipal court.
