Four seats available on K-8 school board this April
by Frank J. McMahon
Three three-year terms and one unexpired two-year term will be available in the April 27 Franklin Lakes K-8 Board of Education election. The current terms of School Board Vice President Carolyn Reitz and trustee Lisa Sciancalepore will expire this year. Trustees Susan McGowan, who was appointed to the board in August 2010 to replace Gabrielle Gutierrez; and Larry Loprete, who was chosen by the board to replace Barbara Capozzi, will have to seek election to the school board this year. Three of the incumbents, Reitz, Loprete, and McGowan have confirmed that they will seek reelection. Sciancalepore has advised that she is undecided at this time. They all have the option of filing for three-year terms or to fill out the two years left on Gutierrez’s term. In addition to serving as vice president of the board, Reitz is currently the chairperson of the Community Relations Committee and is a member of the Curriculum and Personnel committees. She is the board’s liaison to the High Mountain Road School Parent Teacher Association. Reitz has been a trustee since 2005. She has one child at the Franklin Avenue Middle School and one at Indian Hills High School. She is a past president of the High Mountain Road School Parent Teacher Association, was a member of the Friends of the Franklin Lakes Library, and served on Municipal Alliance in Franklin Lakes. She holds a BA in psychology from Lynchburg College. Loprete is filling out Capozzi’s term,
which expires this year. He has lived in Franklin Lakes with his wife Mary and their two sons for nearly eight years. His children attend Colonial Road School and Franklin Avenue Middle School. He graduated from Providence College with a BA degree in 1986 and has been active in the community, serving as the town’s baseball commissioner for grades three and four for the past three years. He is employed at Standard & Poor’s as a senior director responsible for global education and training. Loprete has performed various compliance and managerial activities for major Wall Street firms. McGowan currently serves on the board’s Policy and Curriculum committees, and on the district’s Efficiency Study Committee. She and her husband Peter moved to Franklin Lakes almost six years ago and they have two daughters who attend High Mountain Road School, with one in the fourth grade and the other in the second grade. She earned a BA in economics from LaSalle University and worked as an accounting supervisor for Simpson Thacher and Bartlett in New York for seven years and then as a human resource analyst for KPMG in Montvale for two years. An active member of the High Mountain Road School community, her involvement has included being a Brownie troop leader, class parent, volunteer in the library, and chairperson of the fall book fair for the past four years. Sciancalepore has been a resident of the borough for 19 years. She has two children attending the regional high schools with one attending Ramapo
High School and the other attending Indian Hills High School. She has a BA in political science from the University of Colorado and a Graduate Teaching Certification for grades K-8 with a social science K-12 endorsement from William Paterson University. Previously the president of the Woodside Avenue School Parent Teacher Association and a Franklin Avenue Middle School PTA chair and volunteer, Sciancalepore was a borough council candidate in 2006. She co-founded the first active Democratic Club in 2006, was the District 4 Democratic Organization Committeewoman from 2006 to 2010, and a District 40 New Jersey State Assembly Candidate in 2007. Sciancalepore has served on the district’s Principal Search Committee and the Religion in School and Governor’s Teacher of the Year Recognition committees. She also served on the borough’s Memorial Pond Fundraising Committee in 2006 and was the co-chairperson of Safe Walks in the borough in 2004 and 2005. She has been a member of the Franklin Lakes Municipal Alliance since 2004. The current Franklin Lakes Board of Education is composed of nine members who are elected for three-year terms and
serve on various committees that oversee the operation of the school district under the leadership of the superintendent and with the support of the school district’s business administrator. Nominating petitions are currently available at the administrative offices of the school board office, which is located at the building adjacent to the Franklin Avenue Middle School at the intersection of Pulis and Franklin avenues. The petitions may be picked up between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each weekday. Anyone interested in seeking election to a seat on the K-8 school board must complete and file the nominating petition with the school board secretary no later than 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8. According to Michael Solokas, the school district’s business administrator, prospective school board candidates may obtain a “School Board Candidate Kit” online at www.njsba.org. Published by the New Jersey School Boards Association, the kit includes a nominating petition, information about legal qualifications for school board candidacy, and the role of the school board member. Information about the New Jersey School Ethics Act and important dates in the school election process are also included.
