Page 8 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • February 9, 2011 The Ogdensburg salesman who threw a jug of bleach at Wyckoff’s then-Police Captain Benjamin Fox and then grappled with Fox for the officer’s service weapon, was found guilty on two counts. The verdict was issued last week in Bergen County Superior Court. “I’m basically relieved that it’s all over,” said Fox, who is currently Wyckoff’s chief of police. ”The jury heard all sides of it, and basically they came down on our side of it for the more important charges. They were a good jury.” The jury found Russell Stewart guilty of one count of attempting to disarm a law enforcement officer and one count of aggravated assault on a police officer. Judge Edward Jerejian remanded Stewart to the Bergen County Bail without bail after the verdict was issued. He will face sentencing on March 18. Chief Fox said Stewart faces a sentence of five to 10 years and must serve 85 percent of the time in actual imprisonment. Stewart was found not guilty of assault charges against the drivers and passengers of two cars that he reportedly Ogdensburg man found guilty in Wyckoff assault case rammed at Boulder Run Shopping Center before Fox pulled him over and got into the confrontation on Sept. 11, 2008. The other drivers and passengers were not injured, although their cars were damaged. Fox, though surprised by the assault, hit Stewart with a metal-cased flashlight, winning the praise of fellow officers and Wyckoff Township Committee members for his calm response in a life-threatening situation. Prosecutor Ron McCormick had argued, with some success, that Fox had expected to be helping a disabled motorist when he was assaulted by Stewart, who seriously intended to take his firearm, placing the officer in fear for his life. Stewart, 46, was originally charged with possession of marijuana, possession of narcotics paraphernalia, leaving the scene of an accident, and obstruction of justice, with bail set at $25,000 after he got out of Bergen County Medical Center. Wyckoff Patrolman Michael Musto, who transported Stewart to Bergen County Medical Center, told the court that Stewart had told him he had intended to kill Fox if he obtained control of Fox’s gun, and that he intended to commit suicide if he got his hands on Musto’s gun. J. KOSTER Emmanuel asks... Can You Help? Our hat’s off to: Nativity Church in Midland Park for the generous food drive. We currently have 17 families who require eight to 10 bags of food every month. Please help us fill our pantry. When you go grocery shopping and something non-perishable is on sale, please buy some extra items and drop them off at our outreach center. Our families will be appreciative. ECF uses the community’s contributions to support the costs associated with providing free services to New Jersey children who have cancer. Approximately 70 cents from every dollar goes towards direct care for our families. 4-29-09 karen/janine It’s not possible to do all the fundraising ourselves, so EmmanuelHelp3x.75(4-29-09) we appreciate it when others help us. These articles have resulted in families receiving so much, including a new 3 x .75 roof for one family so they could bring their boy home, and tires for another so they could take their child to treatment. Please understand that if the family’s life is too hectic to write a thank you, we hear from their case workers and the volunteers how thrilled they are. We thank you on behalf of all of these families, and urge you to continue to help us help them. Help Kent and his family: Kent is a young boy of four who was diagnosed with leukemia in September. He is currently in Columbia University Hospital after being transferred from Saint Joseph’s in Paterson where his family lives. Kent has been in a coma for over a month and his health is not improving. He lives with his mom and three siblings, including two sisters, ages seven and five, and a three-year-old brother. His parents are divorced. Kent’s mom feels it’s very important for her to be with her son every day at the hospital. Each morning, she gets her other children ready, drops them off at school and takes public transportation to New York City to spend a few hours with Kent, before hurrying back to Paterson to pick up her other kids from school. Kent’s mom is unable to work due to this grueling schedule and taking care of her children’s needs. She also has very little family support in the area, and there is no one to watch the children in the evenings or on weekends. She is extremely worried about her other children, who have started to show challenging behaviors due to their concern over their brother and the stressful situation. Kent’s mother finds it difficult to help with homework and do regular “fun” activities with her other children because she is often exhausted and preoccupied. She tries her best to protect them and not to worry them too much, and generally does not take them with her to the hospital. This family is in a very difficult financial situation and (continued on page 15) But STILL can’t lose that Tummy or Cellulite?
