Midland Park
The Midland Park Board of Education is mulling its options on when to make up the school days lost to this winter’s snow storms. High school students also have to make up two school days lost in November due to a water main break. Board President Robert Schiffer said the board’s Curriculum Committee would be discussing the issue and would report to the board this week. The board would either decide the matter at the meeting or postpone a decision until its Feb. 15 meeting, he said. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Marie Cirasella said the board has several “good options” on how to make up the days but would not elaborate. She said the school calendar indicates that additional emergency closings are to be made up either in June or by taking days from the spring vacation, scheduled for April 18-22. The school’s website warns that “plans that cannot be changed should never be made to include weekdays in June … . or the April vacation.” The calendar has two built-in emergency days, with school originally scheduled to end on June 22. By local policy, Midland Park’s school calendar has 183 days, three more than required by state law. The board will also have to grapple with how Senior Class members will comply with the school day requirements. Graduation in Midland Park is traditionally sched-

uled for the third Friday in June. June 17 now will fall ahead of when the required days will have been met because of the closings. State law does not permit graduation ceremonies to be held prior to the 180th school day. As of last week the district had had to close three full
days for snow: Jan 2, Jan. 12 and Feb. 2, plus Nov. 1 and 2 at the high school for the water main break. In addition, there was an early dismissal on Jan. 7 and delayed openings on Jan. 18 and Jan 21. These days met the minimum requirements for a school day and do not have to be made up.
