On Feb. 9, residents of Franklin Lakes, Oakland, and Wyckoff are invited to join the American Cancer Society to lean how they can make a difference in the fight against cancer by participating in the 2011 Relay for Life. The kick-off meeting will be held at Indian Hills High School, 97 Yawpo Avenue in Oakland, at 7 p.m. Relay for Life is an overnight community celebration where individuals and

hundreds of luminaria candles around the track in a moving ceremony honor cancer survivors and remember those lost to the disease. This year the Relay for Life will be held on June 11 and 12 at Indian Hills High School. The relay began in 1985 with a man who had lost his wife to cancer. Since that time, the relay has grown to include over 5,000 communities. The relay brings the community together in a unified effort to fight cancer and symbolizes the fight that cancer patients must face after they are diagnosed. The light and the darkness of the day and night parallel the physical effects, emotions, and mental state of a cancer patient while he or she is undergoing treatment. The timing of each event is symbolic, and links the relay participants’ to the experiences of cancer patients. The relay begins as the sun is starting to set. This coming darkness symbolizes the time a person is diagnosed with cancer. As night settles in, it gets colder and darker, just as the emotions of the cancer patient do. The period between 1 and 2 a.m. represents the time when treatments begin. People become exhausted or sick, and may think about giving up. The rising sun represents the end of treatment for the cancer patient. He or she can see the light at the end of the tunnel and knows that life will go on. The morning light brings on a new day full of

caregivers, or pay tribute to those who have lost their battle with cancer to attend the Relay for Life. For more information, call 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org, or relayforlife.org/indianhillsNJ.
