Verdict awaited in trial of man who grappled with officer
by John Koster The trial of a 47-year-old Ogdensburg man who tried to take a service handgun away from then-Police Captain Benjamin Fox is underway in Bergen County Superior Court. A verdict is expected in the near future. While driving his own vehicle, the Ogdensburg resident allegedly deliberately rammed two civilian cars on Sept. 11, 2008. Fox, who is now the chief of police, apprehended him. The man threw a jug of bleach at the ground in front of Fox and then grappled with Fox for control of the officer’s loaded service weapon. When Fox felt the weapon being dislodged from his holster, he clubbed the man with his flashlight and handcuffed him with the help of a passing citizen. The driver was released from the Bergen County Medical Center in Hackensack after treatment of a hand injury and was returned to the Wyckoff Police Department for processing. He was charged with grabbing the gun of a police officer and trying to disarm him, aggravated assault of a police officer, obstruction of a government function, possession of marijuana, possession of narcotics paraphernalia, leaving the scene of an auto accident, two counts of reckless driving, driving under the influence of narcotics, and possession of narcotics in a motor vehicle. The driver was released after posting $25,000 bail. (continued on page 23)
Wyckoff Police Chief Benjamin Fox has cited the last attempted telephone fraud in the township as an example of how unscrupulous economic predators try to bilk people with false promises of huge winnings. “The most recent call (to the police department) was from a resident who received a call from someone claiming to be from the Publishers Clearing House advising that he had won $25 million,” Chief Fox said. “The man was told that, in order to get his money, he simply had to wire $350 to cover administrative fees. All too often, people are so excited about their new-found riches that wiring $350 for fees seems insignificant. They comply, lose the

money that they send, and never receive the big check. “These callers are very convincing and often prey on emotions by making statements such as ‘You can now take care of your family forever with this money.’ The callers often ask you to keep this a secret from others.” Chief Fox urged anyone contacted with offers of huge money in return for wired cash to contact the police or family members before sending any money or providing credit card or bank account information. Once the money is sent, Fox said the chances of getting it back are almost nil. J. KOSTER
