Page 20 THE VILLADOM TIMES I, II, III & IV • February 2, 2011 Best films (continued from Entertainment page) restaurant owner. Eventually, Paul enters the kids’ lives and those of Nic and Jules. This creates a number of problems, insecurities, and resentments along the way. This is a superb movie with a terrific script about real people. Number Four: “Black Swan.” Natalie Portman stars as ballerina Nina Sayers, chosen for the lead in a production of “Swan Lake.” Artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) has no doubt she can undertake the role of the Swan Queen effortlessly, but it’s her portrayal of the Black Swan that raises doubts. Can she muster the passion necessary to sell such an emotional role? Director Darren Aronofsky takes viewers into Nina’s mind as rehearsals take place, her paranoia increases, a new company member (Mila Kunis) is perceived as a professional threat, and Nina’s former-ballerina mother (Barbara Hershey) smothers Nina’s personal life. Aronofsky captivates with Tschaikovsky’s music and dazzling visuals as reality blends into what may or may not be in Nina’s mind. Portman is amazing. Number Three: “The Fighter.” The casting is impeccable, with Mark Wahlberg as title character Micky Ward, Christian Bale as his older brother Dicky, Amy Adams as Micky’s girlfriend, and Melissa Leo as Micky’s aggressive mother/manager. Despite its title, the movie is more about the Ward family dynamics than boxing, especially when they circle the wagons against outside influences, whether decent management, a new girlfriend, or other forces pulling Micky away from family. The showcase role is Bale’s as the showboating former smalltime boxer. Number Two: “The King’s Speech.” This film tells the fascinating tale of a man who becomes king through unusual circumstances and must deal with a debilitating stutter in the age of radio and microphones. The film hinges on the relationship between Bertie (Colin Firth), later to become King George VI, and his speech therapist, Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). Their relationship develops from testy to cordial to dependent as Bertie puts himself into Logue’s hands, often engaging in odd-looking exercises that nonetheless result in Bertie’s more confident speech. Number One: “The Social Network.” This literate movie tells about the genesis of Facebook with Harvard undergrads Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) and Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield) and the adventures and misadventures that followed, personally and legally. Aaron Sorkin’s script includes all the major players in the reallife drama, including the twin brother athletes (both played by Armie Hammer) who claim Eisenberg stole their idea, the college president (Douglas Urbanski) who rebuffs the brothers’ complaints, and entrepreneur Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake), who made a name for himself as the mastermind behind the music-sharing online site, Napster. Eisenberg plays Zuckerberg as brilliant, arrogant, dismissive, and nerdy. He anchors the movie and manages to have the viewer admire him for the idea that made him a multibillionaire. The picture has a winning balance of drama, pathos, humor, and even melodrama. by G.M. Smith by G.M.
