Midland Park December 21, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 5 Garbage, recycling contracts awarded to separate bidders Two new and different haulers will be picking up solid waste and recyclables in Midland Park in the new year. The borough council last week awarded the garbage and yard debris contract to Sterling Carting of Sloatsburg, NY, the low bidder, at $989,000 for the next five years. The paper and commingled recyclables contract was awarded for one year only to low bidder Ferretti Carting Inc. of Hackensack at a cost of $94,965. “The council felt it should give Ferretti a try for one year and see how it works out,” explained Borough Administrator/ Clerk Addie Hanna. “It had the option according to the bid documents,” which allowed aggregate bids. The council initially planned to award both the garbage and recycling contracts for five years to Sterling to streamline operations by having a single contract, according to Hanna. But Sterling’s recycling component was $17,750 higher over the five-year period. Ferretti’s attorney, John Chiaia, attended last week’s council meeting and threatened litigation if his client was bypassed. He explained that Ferretti had “bid aggressively” because Midland Park’s pickups would “fit perfectly with his truck fleet and his availability to do the recycling job,” whereas he would have needed additional equipment and employees to do the garbage. “There is no harm to the town, and there are savings. My client is known in the marketplace, and he has solid bonding,” he added. Services to residents will remain unchanged. Garbage pickups will remain on Mondays and Thursdays, with branches (continued on page 27) Football association will always have storage rights The Midland Park Football and Cheerleading Association will have guaranteed storage space some place in town should it ever lose its present storage space at the rear of the DePhillips Center. The borough council last week adopted a resolution memorializing the arrangement at the request of association officers Doug Hildebrandt and John Riley. The men said they are retiring from their leadership positions in the association and want to leave no loose ends. The association erected the 20 by 25foot storage addition in 2008 with volunteer labor to accommodate its own equipment in addition to wrestling mats and other large sports items. It lost storage space inside the old recreation barn off Dairy Street when the building was refurbished into a modernday recreation facility.
