December 7, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 5 Area Franklin Lakes Municipal Judge Francis Leddy Jr. has found Wyckoff Township Committeeman Thomas Madigan guilty of simple assault and fined Madigan $150 with three days of community service, but Madigan has asked that the penalties not be imposed pending his appeal. Despite many character witnesses in his favor, Madigan was found guilty of slapping an admittedly unruly 17-year-old at a football game more than a year ago. The youth’s mother signed a complaint after the youth was escorted off the football field by police. A video introduced as evidence showed Madigan slapping the boy in the face. Madigan said the boy had struck him first, damaging his eyeglasses, and the two of them grappled and fell. This action was not shown in the video, which was only a partial record of the event. The video, however, reportedly showed Madigan slapping the youth in the face with an open hand. The trial had taken place on Oct. 31, but Judge finds Madigan guilty of simple assault the verdict was suspended until last week. In the meantime, Madigan, an appointed incumbent, lost his bid for election. Brian Scanlan, the Wyckoff Township Committee’s lone Democrat and Madigan’s Republican running mate Douglas Christie won the two seats on the township’s governing body. Some observers who know Madigan noted that sentencing him to three days of community service is ironic, since Madigan had served 12 years on the Ramapo Indian Hills Board of Education before his appointment to the Wyckoff Township Committee. He also regularly turns out for sports and charitable events in the community as a volunteer. The boy’s family members reportedly said that justice had been done, and were satisfied with the verdict. Madigan, however, told the judge that he intended to appeal and prove that he had acted in his own defense. J.
