She received her teaching degree from New Jersey State Teachers College at Jersey City and taught first grade at Prospect Park Elementary School until her marriage in 1937. Later, she taught first grade in the Haledon Public Schools until her retirement. She was a member of the Covenant Christian Reformed Church of North Haledon (formerly the Third Christian Reformed Church of Paterson). She is survived by her children Peter Gerrit Berkhout Jr. of North Haledon, Frances Soderberg of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Dorothea Berkhout of Princeton, four grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Dr. Peter Gerrit Berkout, her brother Adrian Struyk, and her sister Henriette Struyk. James W. Boyan of Wyckoff, formerly of Glen Rock, died Nov. 28. He was 62. He graduated from Bergen Catholic High School. He received an AB in history from Joanna Berkhout and brother Michael Mc Grath. She was predeceased by her husband Edward. Arrangements were made by Vander Plaat Funeral Home in Wyckoff. Arthur Larsen of Midland Park, formerly of Norwood and Demarest, died Nov. 25. He was 89. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He was born in Stavanger, Norway. He was an advertising copywriter on Madison Avenue in New York City. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Foundation. Wanda Powell of Midland Park died Nov. 28. She was 86. She was a ward secretary at the Bergen Pine County Hospital until she retired. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Wyckoff. She is survived by her children Larry of Hazlet, Leigh Galanis of Brewster, New York, and Lynn Richter of Cherry Hill, six grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. She retired in 1993 from Ramapo College where she worked Saint Peter’s College, an MBA from Rutgers University and a law degree from Seton Hall University. He served as senior vice president and general counsel for Bell Atlantic Capital Corporation where he worked for 16 years, and later he had a private law practice in Glen Rock. He is survived by his wife Melanie, his children Keara Kumler of Boston, Massachusetts, James W. Boyan III of Hoboken, Maura Boyan of Wyckoff, and Colin Boyan of Baltimore, Maryland, one granddaughter, his mother Maura K. Boyan of Sea Girt, and his siblings Marcy Boyan, Maureen Ward, William Boyan, Kathleen Keehn, Peter Boyan, Sean Boyan, Peg Fischer, and Deirdre Heine. He is predeceased by his father James W. She was a member of the Wyckoff Seniors and the Red Hats. She is survived by her children Dr. Edward Clark of Henderson, Nevada and Kathleen Clark of Laguna Beach, California, one grandson, and her siblings Maureen Kallo Arthur Larsen Wanda Powell for more than 20 years. She was a member of the Mahwah Senior Citizens and was a member of the Mahwah Woman’s Club for over 40 years. She was a member of the Republican Club of Mahwah and served as a county committeewoman for 30 years. She is survived by her children Geraldine Venino of Sea Girt, Robert Royce of Mahwah, Carolyn Hopper of Hilton Head, South Carolina, and Pamela Roes of Princeton, eight grandchildren, and four greatgranddaughters. She was co-owner, along with her husband, of Orchard Properties, LLC. She was a member of the first graduating class of Ramsey High School. She is survived by her husband Anthony of Upper Saddle River, her daughters Joan Gundersen of Mahwah, Carole Grisafi of Woodcliff Lake, and Nancy Smith of Mahwah, three grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and her sisters Ann Esposito of Saddle River and Victoria Gudger of Toms River.
