Page 6 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • August 31, 2011 Area Don Bosco students to benefit from LAN scholarship LAN Associates Engineering, Planning, Architecture, Surveying, Inc., headquartered in Midland Park, recently announced the establishment of the John A. Lacz, P.E. Scholarship, which will assist students with financial need who attend Don Bosco Preparatory High School in Ramsey. Don Bosco is a private, Catholic, college preparatory high school for young men. The school delivers rigorous academics and strongly encourages participation in extracurricular activities, clubs, and athletics. This new scholarship honors Lacz, a Don Bosco Prep alumnus from the Class of 1949. Lacz founded LAN Associates in 1965. In 2002, Don Bosco Prep inducted him into its Hall of Fame. The John A. Lacz, P.E. Scholarship recipient will be selected by Don Bosco Prep based on entrance exam results and middle school academic performance. The recipient must be well rounded and hard-working and active inside and outside the classroom. He must also have a strong sense of character, partake in community service, and have a consistently good academic record. “John is an active alumnus who will never say ‘no’ to offering any assistance he can to this institution,” said Don Bosco Alumni Director Rich Wisniewski. “LAN’s generous gift -- funding scholarships for our students -- reflects the company’s passion for youth and for building community as well as showing John’s love for the school.” “I certainly have a soft spot for Don Bosco,” Lacz added. “The time I spent there taught me not to be timid to take on new challenges and do new things. To this day, I still apply the valuable lessons I learned at Don Bosco in all that I do. Always study and work hard; it doesn’t cost any more and the results are outstanding,” he continued. “I am honored to have this scholarship named on my behalf. I feel a close relationship with Don Bosco because its faculty helped me to develop my character and initiatives from a young age. I still attend some of the school’s functions and have even hired Don Bosco students as part-time employees at LAN. I was more than happy to provide a good working experience for those individuals and they have all gone on to have very successful careers.” Scholarship applications must be submitted to the Don Bosco Business Office, along with a request for financial assistance and proper documentation. All applications for this scholarship will be reviewed annually in May. Don Bosco is located at 492 North Franklin Turnpike in Ramsey. Call (201) 327-8003 for additional information. Public Service Electric and Gas recommends that its customers test their gas heating systems now, before the chilly weather arrives. If there is a problem, PSE&G will come out to start the unit, at no charge, through Sept. 11. “Chilly weather will be here soon, and one of the best things customers can do now is to check their heating system to ensure safe and efficient operation before the colder weather arrives,” said Joe Bassolino, manager of business development at PSE&G. “By testing their heating systems early, customers will be prepared for the upcoming cold weather. In addition, PSE&G will be able to respond more quickly now if there is a problem.” PSE&G customers are advised to first inspect their gas-fired heating systems to ensure the units start and run properly. How to check the heating system: • Verify that the area surrounding the unit is free of combustible items like boxes, paper, clothing, paint, etc. • Make sure that the flue pipe is connected and in good condition. • If there is a water boiler, verify that the indicator on the pressure gauge falls into the normal range (12-15 psi cold). • If there is a steam heating system, check the water level in the sight glass. If it is low, turn on the water supply valve to bring the water level up to the half-way mark. Turn off the valve. • For warm-air furnace systems, check and replace dirty air filters. Verify that the blower door is tightly closed and correctly secured. • Verify that all controls, valves, and electrical switches are in the “on” position. How to start the heating system: • If the unit is equipped with a pilot, confirm that it is lit. If the pilot light is out, follow the instructions on the heating unit to relight it. Let the pilot light burn a few minutes before continuing. • Many heating units use a form of automatic ignition. Review the starting instructions located on the unit before (continued on page 19) PSE&G: Test heat before cold weather
