ShopRite opponents to take center stage next month
by John Koster Opponents of the proposed ShopRite supermarket at the site of the long-vacant A&P building at Wyckoff and Greenwood avenues will have their chance to testify before the Wyckoff Planning Board starting on Sept. 14. Wyckoff Township Committeeman Christopher De Phillips announced at a recent meeting of the governing body that the applicant, Inserra Supermarkets, had recently concluded his testimony. Wyckoff officials confirmed that the planning board would hear from representatives of the nearby Stop & Shop at Boulder Run, and probably from the owners of Boulder Run, starting next month. The hearings with the applicant alone have continued for more than a year. “Today’s consumers value convenience and competitive pricing, especially in the current economy,” said James Jaworski, the attorney who is representing Inserra Supermarkets. “In a township that once boasted four supermarkets, ShopRite of Wyckoff will offer this and more from a good, responsible corporate neighbor.” The proposed 62,042-square-foot ShopRite would replace a vacant 53,500-squate foot building that occupies one side of a large parking lot. The ShopRite plans, which call for 1,130 new shade trees and shrubs, have been reviewed by the Wyckoff Shade Tree Commission and the Wyckoff Design and Review Commission. The Wyckoff groups recommended a change in exterior design to comport with Wyckoff’s general decorum, and Inserra complied.
“The general public has been extremely supportive of this redevelopment and Inserra Supermarkets is grateful,” Jaworski said. “We look forward to addressing future inquiries and collaborating with township officials and their experts to bring this project to fruition.” Inserra became the long-term lessee of the 7.6-acre site in 2009. The Inserra Supermarkets chain started in 1954 as (continued on page 17)
