Fall course schedule announced This fall, Midland Park Continuing Education will offer a variety of courses, shows, day tours, and overnight trips, including a trip to Spain and Portugal. Courses are being offered to adults and children. Some of the new offerings include: Internet Safety classes for parents and students in grades four through eight; So You Think You Can Dance for children in grades one through six; SAT Prep classes for students in grades 11 and 12; Instant Speed Reading; Unleash Your BrainFarrow Memory; Keep Your Car in Showroom Condition; Small Business Legal Check Up; R.I.P.P.E.D. – The One Stop Body Shock; and Transitions – A System for Health and for Life. This season, the yoga offerings have been expanded. In addition to a beginner class, MPCE will offer Hatha Yoga for those with six to 12 months of experience, an intermediate course, and a new class: restorative yoga, which will be held on Monday evenings. September 11 memorial scheduled On Sunday, Sept. 11, Midland Park’s houses of worship will meet at 6 p.m. at Faith Reformed Church, 95 Prospect Street in Midland Park for a Sept. 11 Tenth Anniversary Memorial Service. Participants will pray for the country and the world and for God’s peace and healing. Thrift shop holds end of season sale The Community Thrift Shop in the Midland Park Shopping Center, 85 Godwin Avenue in Midland Park, will be closed on Sept. 3, 4, and 5, and will re-open on Sept. 6 for both selling and receiving during regular hours, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cooperstown’s team sign-up under way Sign-up for the Midland Park Baseball 2012 Cooperstown’s team is under way and will continue until Aug. 31. To be eligible, players must meet all of the Midland Park Baseball Association recreation/travel requirements. Clothing drive under way Attendees must be 12 years of age on or before April 30, 2012. In the event of overwhelming response to the program, a tryout will be scheduled and players will be reviewed by an outside evaluator. The cost of the evaluator will be split among those players who attend the tryout. Parents should be prepared to participate in the year-long fundraising required to send the team to Cooperstown. Alliance provides summer counseling The Midland Park Alliance Committee, in cooperation with the Midland Park Board Education, has provided counseling for Midland Park students this summer. The last date Craig Rush, student assistance counselor for Midland Park Public Schools will be on hand for the students in kindergarten through grade 12 will be on Aug. 31. Hours are from noon to 4 p.m. in his office at the high school, 250 Prospect Street. Food Drive to benefit CFA Kid’s Clubhouse will continue its Food Drive for the Center for Food Action in Mahwah throughout the summer. Donations may be dropped off Monday through Friday during camp hours through Aug. 31. Kid’s Clubhouse is located at 85 Godwin Avenue. Travel basketball registration under way The Midland Park Basketball Association is now accepting registration for travel basketball. This clothing drive will run through September 30, so stop by with your gently used menswear donations today. MPHS Principal (continued from page 3) Capuano received a bachelor’s degree in history from Marist College and a master’s degree in educational administration and supervision from Montclair State University. Before joining the staff at Midland Park High School, he taught seventh and eighth grade students at Saint Paul the Apostle in Irvington for two years. In his previous district, Capuano served as history department chairman and as advisor to the student council. He earned Outstanding Teacher of the Year honors in 1998. He has served as head football coach at MPHS, mentoring the teams with the best season records since Coach “Sonny” Santorine in 1966 (8-2 in 2002 and 7-3 in 2003). When the MPHS football program was merged with Waldwick’s, Capuano became the assistant head coach in charge of defense. The new principal grew up in Wyckoff. He was captain of Ramapo High School’s football team, and became an allcounty linebacker. He went on to play football at Marist and later coached at Leonia High School and at William Paterson University. Capuano also coached baseball at MPHS for eight years and served as adviser to the National Honor Society for six years. He resides in Ramsey.
