The film explores the changing perspectives of Yiddish filmmaking during the era of early sound pictures. Assembled from archives of Brandeis University’s Jewish film center and directed by British actor Russ Karel, the 90-minute film includes clips of Al Jolson, Herschel Bernardi, Moyshe Oicher, Leo Fuchs, and other famed artists of the period. Town Fair plans under way Planning for the Sept. 24, 2011 Franklin Lakes Town Fair is in full swing. The Town Fair Committee invites all local businesses, Chamber of Commerce members, school and community organizations, and houses of worship to participate in this year’s celebration, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Rain date: Sept. 25.) The event will include carnival rides and food, which will be available until 8 p.m. Non-profit organizations may sell food, games, drinks, and rides. Franklin Lakes residents and businesses may sell items or sponsor an activity. Out-of-town crafters may participate for an added fee. Seniors plan events The Franklin Lakes Seniors will travel to the Westchester Broadway Theater on Thursday, Aug. 25 to see the musical comedy, “Altar Boyz.” Tickets are $57 for members and $62 for non-members. The bus will depart at 9:45 a.m. from the Franklin Lakes Recreation Field. A day trip to the Delaware Water Gap is planned for Thursday, Sept. 29. The trip includes a one-hour scenic trolley tour, which includes a discussion about Native Americans and early settlers; lunch at the Stroudsmoor Country Inn; and “Postmortem,” a show that will be presented at the Shawnee Playhouse. The cost is $57 for members and $62 for non-members. The bus will leave from the Franklin Lakes Recreation Field at 8 a.m. On Oct. 26, the seniors will travel to the August Wilson Theater in New York City to see “Jersey Boys.” Tickets are $70 for members and $75 for non-members. A box lunch is included in the price of the ticket. Local artist to exhibit watercolors Wyckoff artist Alice Petkus-Mason will exhibit her watercolors at the Franklin Lakes Library during the month of August. Free music downloads available Franklin Lakes Public Library has joined Freegal to offer access to songs from Sony Music’s catalog of legendary artists. Freegal will allow the Franklin Lakes Library to increase the size and diversity of its collection by offering access to hundreds of thousands of songs. Under the terms of the agreement, registered cardholders of the Franklin Lakes Public Library may download a select number of Sony Music tracks in the MP3 format each month at no direct cost via www.franklinlakeslibrary.org. Register for ‘Splash and Dash’ The Second Annual Franklin Lakes Youth “Splash and Dash” Biathlon will be held on Sept. 10 at 8 a.m. Athletes, ages seven through 16, will compete in the swim/run event held at The Indian Trail Club at 830 Franklin Lake Road in Franklin Lakes. The race is designed to promote health and wellness for children and is sponsored by The Franklin Lakes Recreation and Parks Department and the Wyckoff Family YMCA with the support of the Franklin Lakes Mayor’s Wellness Campaign and the Indian Trail Club. Four age groups will compete as follows: those age eight and under will complete a 75-yard pool swim and one-mile run; those who are nine to 11 will swim 200 yards in the pool and run two miles; competitors who are 12 to 14 will swim 400 yards in the lake and run 2.5 miles; and those who are 15 and 16 will swim 600 yards in the lake and run three miles. All participants will receive a T-shirt. Prizes will be awarded to the top three competitors in each age category and to the top three relay teams. Fees are $50 per individual, and $65 for relay teams. The race is limited to 150 participants. Sponsorship opportunities are available.
