History of Yiddish cinema presented Temple Emanuel will offer a free public screening of “Almonds and Raisins” narrated by Orson Welles on Sunday, Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. at the temple located at 558 High Mountain Road in Franklin Lakes. The film explores the changing perspectives of Yiddish filmmaking during the era of early sound pictures. Assembled from archives of Brandeis University’s Jewish film center and directed by British actor Russ Karel, the 90-minute film includes clips of Al Jolson, Herschel Bernardi, Moyshe Oicher, Leo Fuchs, and other famed artists of the period. A Yiddish film short will be shown at the beginning of the program. Freegal will allow the Franklin Lakes Library to increase the size and diversity of its collection by offering access to hundreds of thousands of songs. Under the terms of the agreement, registered cardholders of the Franklin Lakes Public Library may download a select number of Sony Music tracks in the MP3 format each month at no direct cost via www.franklinlakeslibrary. org. Town Fair plans under way Planning for the Sept. 24, 2011 Franklin Lakes Town Fair is in full swing. The Town Fair Committee invites all local businesses, Chamber of Commerce members, school and community organizations, and houses of worship to participate in this year’s celebration, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Rain date: Sept. 25.) The event will include carnival rides and food, which will be available until 8 p.m. Non-profit organizations may sell food, games, drinks, and rides. Franklin Lakes residents and businesses may sell items or sponsor an activity. Out-of-town crafters may participate for an added fee. The third quarter tax bills for 2011 could not be mailed until the county set the tax rate for the borough. Phillip Moore, the borough’s tax collector, said the bills would be mailed shortly. Third quarter tax amounts are also available in the tax collection office. According to Moore, the grace period for paying third quarter property tax bills will be extended to Tuesday, Sept. 6, after which time interest will be charged back to Aug. 1, as mandated by state law.
