Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • August 3, 2011 FLOW Area Regional district partners with MSG Varsity TV by Frank J. McMahon The Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School District will soon have its athletic and other extracurricular events and activities televised on MSG Varsity, Cablevision’s 24/7 television network dedicated to high school events. Superintendent Lauren Schoen announced the contract agreement at a recent board of education meeting. She advised that there will be two advisors appointed with one at each school in the district, and their stipends will be paid by MSG Varsity. “For those that signed up to be partner schools,” Schoen said, “MSG Varsity will include the school as part of their high school coverage for key matchups and events, such as key league games, county tournaments, rivalries, top college recruit showcase, and special events. Depending on the significance of the game or event, MSG will either send out their own production crew or use footage submitted by the schools. The video footage may then be used on the MSG Varsity channel’s Sports Desk or on their website. “It is important to note that MSG Varsity has expanded beyond just covering high school sports. They have segments highlighting special events and activities as well. “I believe any vehicle for publicity for the teams in our athletic program and numerous activities at both high schools is important. Our students, coaches, and advisors spend countless hours preparing for either a game or activity. For those who cannot attend some of our games or activities at the time they occurred, or simply want to see it a later date when it is televised, MSG Varsity offers us a way to share the many wonderful opportunities and accomplishments of our district students.” MSG Varsity is a Cablevision exclusive service multiplatform suite of services comprised of a high-definition 24/7 television network, a comprehensive online destination, and a groundbreaking interactive service, all dedicated to high school sports, academics, and activities occurring throughout the tri-state area. The content for these services includes MSG Varsity’s professionally produced programming, and content created by the high schools. The MSG Varsity television station, Channel 14 in the Franklin Lakes, Oakland, and Wyckoff area, is the first of its kind of multi-platform service that enables students to share their stories through a combination of television, online, and interactive media. MSG Varsity permits students who are passionate about what they do to be both in front of and behind the camera, whether they are athletes, actors, debaters, or marching band members. The television service gives students the opportunity to share that passion with others. Working in partnership with MSG Varsity, students and faculty are given extraordinary access to curriculum and training in multimedia creation and distribution, allowing them to become active participants in telling their schools’ stories. The service reaches three million households throughout the New York market. Now in its “sophomore” year, MSG Varsity showcases the best the local high schools have to offer, including 400 multi-camera game productions, award-winning series and specials, and “High School Sports Desk,” MSG Varsity’s live signature nightly sports show. Temple Emanuel will offer a free public screening of “Almonds and Raisins” narrated by Orson Welles on Sunday, Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. at the temple located at 558 High Mountain Road in Franklin Lakes. The film explores the changing perspectives of Yiddish filmmaking during the era of early sound pictures. Assembled from archives of Brandeis University’s Jewish film center and directed by British actor Russ Karel, the 90-minute film includes clips of Al Jolson, Herschel Bernardi, Moyshe Oicher, Leo Fuchs, and other famed artists of the period. A Yiddish film short will be shown at the beginning of the program. For more information, visit www.tenjfl.org or call (201) 560-0200. History of Yiddish cinema presented
