Arbor Day events to highlight new Nifty Fifty effort
by John Koster Wyckoff officials hope Arbor Day, April 30, will be a major event in the township’s campaign to make Nifty Fifty a policy that saves taxpayers $85,000 to $100,000 as it helps save the environment. Last year, Wyckoff recycled 29 percent of the material that went to the waste stream. The township recycled 2,725 tons of material for reuse after recycling and dumped 6,662 tons in landfills, which led to extra expenses through “tipping fees” and haulage and clutter in the landscape. This year, the goal is to achieve a 50 percent, or “Nifty Fifty,” recycling rate. Wyckoff’s single stream recycling program accepts all paper, including junk mail; all cardboard, including cereal boxes; all plastics, except for Styrofoam; tin cans; and glass bottles and jars. Residents are urged to recycle grass clippings right into the lawns or on their own property, instead of hauling it to composting areas. The Wyckoff Department of Public Works will pick up heavy household appliances if residents call (201) 981-7000, extension 101, to schedule a bulk pick up. Electronics, including TVs, computers, printers, and DVD players, may be dropped off at the Wyckoff Recycling Center at 476 West Main Street during regular hours of operation. This year’s Arbor Day Celebration will begin at 9 a.m. at Zabriskie Pond. Participants will install new plantings as part of the second phase of reforesting the scenic pond with willow trees. Wyckoff residents are also urged to plant shade or ornamental trees in their own yards. As part of the day’s events, the township has scheduled a mobile paper shredding vehicle to appear at the parking lot of Wyckoff Memorial Town Hall. Residents are invited to bring their papers to be shredded at no charge from about 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The shredded paper will be added to the recycling stream instead of the local landfill. Greenstar Recycling Company has arranged for the shredder to visit at no charge to the township. Residents may also wish to visit police headquarters at Wyckoff Town Hall from 10 a.m. to noon to drop off unneeded prescription drugs and household remedies.
From rarely mentioned ... to fully embraced.
One hundred years ago, 14 deacons from the Reformed tradition addressed an issue that few would talk about: care for the mentally ill in Bergen and Passaic counties. The deacons made a commitment to build a hospital to provide physical, mental, and spiritual care based on Christian principles. From a small 17-bed psychiatric hospital in a farmhouse, Christian Health Care Center (CHCC) has grown today to include a broad spectrum of mental-health and elder-care services with 12 expansive buildings on 78 acres in Wyckoff and Hawthorne, with a satellite location in Wayne.
