The Bergen County Department of Community Affairs has approved the architect’s plans for the exterior work at the Waldwick Railroad Station. The next step, according to Waldwick Community Alliance Vice President Doug 4-27-11 to select the contractor that will do the work. Cowie, is janine Bids from several selected WCC5KBanner(4-27-11) contractors were due April 26. 6 x .75 and project architect Grace Lynch of L+C Design Cowie Consultants of Secaucus held a pre-bid meeting last week with the five contractors the WCA is interested in using to familiarize everyone with the site and the building, to go over the plans and specifications and allow for questions and ideas. The contractors selected for consideration have to go through an extensive approval process from the county and state to be allowed to work on historically-registered properties. All of the ones being considered meet this criteria, Cowie said. All have worked on train stations from the same era and have a full understanding of the scope of work. Phase I of the restoration project includes replacing the roof with a new slate roof, replacing the deteriorated and non-original chimney, installing old-fashion Yankee gutters, and replacing the completely rotted sill plate. To access this area, which has been underground for decades, the grade around the building must be lowered. This lower grade will be maintained, and the rest of the site will be re-graded to allow for positive storm water drainage. This will be accomplished by changing the pitch of the land and installing numerous underground drains. “These items are deemed the most complex and expensive part of the project,” Cowie explained. “The amount that gets done and the order in which they are done will depend on the estimates that come in,” Cowie said, adding that if there is available funding, the Alliance intends on removing the stucco exterior to expose the original wood siding, make necessary repairs and replace windows and doors. He also said that the WCA has to conform to stricter guidelines because of the building’s historic status and because it is on state-owned land. Cowie said that WCA’s primary source of funding is through the Bergen County Historic Preservation Trust Fund Program, which is a 3-1 matching program. “We could qualify for grants up to $480,000, but it is unlikely that we will receive close to that amount the first year. Grants are typically spread out over a few years,” he said. Cowie said that the grant allocations won’t be announced until late summer, but work on the project may begin earlier using the funding already in place through WCA’s own fundraising efforts. One such effort coming up on June 12 (rain date, June 19) is the Annual WCA Car Show, to be held at the Waldwick Train Station from 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. The event provides

The Waldwick Band will conclude its season with a concert on Sunday afternoon, May 1 at The Village School in Waldwick. The 3 p.m. concert will feature saxophonist Lew Archer. Archer, who is the principal saxophonist with the Waldwick Band, has studied with the noted saxophone teacher Paul Cohen and has performed with the Ridgewood Concert Band and the Teaneck Summer Band. The soloist has appeared as a featured player on several earlier occasions with the band, soloing on the soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones. For this concert, he will perform “The Septienne Solo de Contest,” a solo for baritone saxophone and band by the 19th century French composer Henri Singelee. He will be joined by the Waldwick Band Saxophone Quartet in the performance of Eric Ewazen’s “Rhapsody for Saxophone.” The band will be under the baton of Music Director Edmund A. Moderacki, who will open the concert with its 2010-11 signature piece, Henry Fillmore’s “Americans We.” He will conduct the ensemble in Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide Overture” and Gordon Jacob’s “William Byrd Suite.” Also on the program will be selections from Lionel Bart’s Broadway show “Oliver,” the jazz classic “Birdland,” and Paul Hindemith’s “Symphonic Metamorphosis March.” Other marches by Heed, Weidt, and Latann will complete the concert. The Village School is located at 100 West Prospect Street in Waldwick, close to the Waldwick High School athletic field, and offers a fine auditorium with theater style seating for concert attendees. There is no admission charge for the concert. The Waldwick Band’s summer series will begin on Tuesday evening, July 5 at the Waldwick Circle Amphitheater. Information on all the activities of the band is available at www.waldwickband.org.
