Four vie for two seats on K-8 school board
by John Koster Two three-year seats on the Wyckoff Board of Education are being sought by four candidates in the April 27 election. Current Board President Robert Francin and Board Vice President Lisa Martone, who were appointed to one-year terms last year when there were more seats than candidates, will be running as appointed incumbents. Incumbent trustee Thomas Giamanco’s will be running for reelection, and newcomer Karl Drehwing will also be seeking a three-year seat. Francin, an eight-year resident of Wyckoff, has a bachelor’s degree from William Paterson University and a law degree from Rutgers Law School. He is a director of employee engagement at a technical firm and a member of the Bergen County Child Placement Review Board. He is active in Saint Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church. He and his wife have two children. Giamanco, a life-long Wyckoff resident, is an attorney with a law degree from Brooklyn Law School. He is a member of Saint Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church, an assistant Cub Scout leader, and a coach of soccer, baseball, and softball. He and his wife have two children. Martone has a bachelor’s degree in math and physics and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Montclair State University. An 11-year resident of Wyckoff, she is a supervisor at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, and has been a high school teacher and an adjunct college professor. She and her husband have one son. Martone is a past state director of the Academic Decathlon, past president of the Lincoln School Parent Teacher Organization, and past chairperson of the coordinating council of the Wyckoff PTOs. Martone is a member of Saint Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church and is an active volunteer with Boy Scout Troop 89 and Cub Scout Pack 110. Drehwing owns and operates Drehwing Construction in Wyckoff. A 35-year resident of Wyckoff, Drehwing served as an alternate member of the Wyckoff Board of Adjustment in 2010, and is active in Saint Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church. The candidate coached Wyckoff recreational sports from 1995 to 2005. He and his wife have three daughters. Ray Hovey will be the only candidate for the one-year seat on the board of education this year since Sabaudin Skenderi has dropped out of the K-8 race. Skenderi remains a candidate for the Ramapo-Indian Hills Board of Education. Hovey, who served on the board from 2004-10, has a degree in finance from Lehigh University. He is a manufacturer
and distributor of non-ferrous goods from the wire and cable industry, and is active working with Cub Scout Pack 198. He and his wife have two sons. Voters will also decide on the $31,799,928 tax levy associated with the proposed 201112 budget for the K-8 district. The Wyckoff PTO Coordinating Council will host “Meet the Candidates Night” for those seeking election to the Wyckoff Board of Education. This special informational session will be held April 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Eisenhower Middle School, 344 Calvin Court.
