Page 8 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • April 13, 2011 Wyckoff Wanderings Arbor Day activities announced The Township of Wyckoff will celebrate Arbor Day on April 30 with a series of events. Arbor Day activities will begin at Zabriskie Park Pond at 9 a.m. with a “reforesting” of the rim of the pond with willow trees. The pond is located behind the Wyckoff Shopping Center on Wyckoff Avenue. Residents are invited to participate in the annual tree-planting and are urged to plant a tree in their own yards. A mobile paper shredder will be available to Wyckoff residents from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Wyckoff Town Hall at Scott Plaza. Residents who wish to shred papers are urged to bring their correspondence in cardboard boxes. The boxes will also be recycled. The use of the shredder truck is being donated by the Greenstar Recycling Company. The Wyckoff Police Headquarters will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to receive unused or expired prescription medications for safe disposal. Meet the candidates set On April 20, the Wyckoff Republican League will host the Republican candidates who are running for township committee. This 7 p.m. meeting will be held at Larkin House at 380 Godwin Avenue. Anyone who wishes to join the league may visit wyckoffrepublicanleague.com. Membership dues are $25 per person; $40 for a family. Scholarship offered Applications for The Elizabeth “Bitsy” Madigan Scholarship, awarded annually to two female seniors – one from Ramapo High School and one from Indian Hills -are available in the high schools’ guidance departments. Ten-year-old Bitsy, the sixth of seven children from a close knit family, died in 1999. Celebrating her love of life, this scholarship is awarded to young women of strong character and values who are admired for their genuine concern for others. Society sets sale The Ladies Aid Society of the Wyckoff Reformed Church will hold a Rummage Sale on Thursday, April 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the lower level of the education building at 580 Wyckoff Avenue. A $3 bag sale will begin at 2:15 p.m. The sale will feature clothing, jewelry, household items, knickknacks, toys, and more. Receiving days for donations will be held on April 26 and 27. DeNicola to address Chamber Bergen County Freeholder Maura DeNicola will address the Wyckoff Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, April 21 at 8 a.m. at the Larkin House on 380 Godwin Avenue. DeNicola will outline the plans and goals of the Board of Chosen Freeholders. The Chamber meets on the third Thursday of the month. For more information, visit Wyckoffchamber.com. Seniors plan trips The Wyckoff Seniors will host a trip to Indian Head Resort in the White Mountains of New Hampshire from Sept. 12 through 15. The trip will include bus transportation, accommodations for four nights, four dinners and full breakfasts, entertainment, side trips, and more. The cost is $619 for double occupancy. The Wyckoff Seniors group meets on Tuesdays at 11:15 a.m. at the Larkin House at 380 Godwin Avenue. Easter Egg Hunt set Cedar Hill Christian Reformed Church Basketball legend, Walt Frazier (center), recently visited the Wyckoff Family YMCA to promote his new book, “Rockin’ Steady.” Walt is pictured with the Allendale Newcomers basketball team. Basketball legend visits YMCA will host its first Easter Egg Hunt on April 16 at 2 p.m. (Rain date: April 23.) The event will include crafts and activities followed by an egg hunt for children ages one through 12. The church is located at 422 Cedar Hill Avenue in Wyckoff. Art supply donations sought The Longview Assisted Living Residence at the Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff is planning a centennial celebration with its Second Annual Art Exhibit in September. Longview is seeking donations of art supplies including canvases, paint paper, foam boards, acrylic paints, watercolor paints, colored pencils, pastels, stamps/ink, air-dry clay, and brushes. The event will showcase the residents’ artwork throughout the year. The elderly, especially those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, often find that art therapy is a great tool for expression. Spring tennis lessons offered The Wyckoff Recreation and Parks Department will offer its Spring Tennis Learning Program to Wyckoff residents from kindergarten students through adults. The program will be directed by Tennis Dynamics under the guidance of Bill Bess. Two five-week clinics will be offered on Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m. beginning April 29 and Saturdays from 12 to 4 p.m. beginning April 30. Participants may register for one or both clinics, subject to space availability. The one-hour clinics will be held at the Memorial Tennis Courts. Registrations will be accepted at the recreation office from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, through April 15. Early registration is encouraged as there is limited space in each session.
