Team Up to Tidy Up nets 104 bags of litter
by John Koster This month’s Team Up to Tidy Up event eliminated 104 bags of litter and trash from 25 quasi-public sites around the Township of Wyckoff through the labor of municipal officials and volunteers of all ages. Mayor Kevin Rooney and Township Committeemen Rudy Boonstra, Christopher De Phillips, Tom Madigan, and Brian Scanlan joined residents and other municipal officials in picking up 64 backs of litter and trash and 40 bags of recyclable materials. Wyckoff Environmental Commission members Brian Bigler, Peter Wiederhold, Doug Marke, Cathy Runge, Randy Hoogerheyde, and Justin Schmittberger took part in the cleanup. The Christian Health Care Center’s staff, Wyckoff Partners in Pride, and Friends of Wyckoff also participated. Wyckoff Partners in Pride launched Team Up to Tidy Up more than 20 years ago when some of the founding members noticed litter in locations that were neither privately owned nor municipally owned. Friends of Wyckoff was formed by residents who were concerned about the development of Deep Voll Ravine and about preserving dedicated open space in the community. The youth contingent included were members of Boy Scout Troop 89; Cub Scout Packs 110, 198, 210, and 309; and

Wyckoff and other communities are attempting to increase recycling to cover 50 percent of all materials disposed of. The present level is said to be 29 percent. The steel bottles are an attempt to reduce the use of plastic water bottles, which are a source of litter in many suburban communities.
The Wyckoff Township Committee voted unanimously to continue working with the Wyckoff Parks & Recreation Foundation to discuss the possible installation of sports lighting and artificial turf, especially at Memorial Field and Pulis Field.
