Twice-a-week garbage collections resume in borough
by Frank J. McMahon The twice-a-week collection of garbage in Franklin Lakes has resumed and will continue through September. On April 1, the borough’s garbage collection company, Gaeta Recycling Company, began picking up twice a week for all residents. The two day a week collection started on April 1 for residents with a Tuesday and Friday collection schedule and on April 4 for residents with a Monday and Thursday collection schedule. During the months when there are two collection days, if the collection falls on a holiday, garbage will be collected on the next scheduled collection day. However, there will be no change in the recycling collection schedule. Mayor Frank Bivona advised that, according to the borough code, garbage cannot be brought to the curb earlier than 3 p.m. on the day preceding the collection date. Residents are encouraged to place trash at the curb the morning of the collection, but no later than 6 a.m. in order to keep neighborhoods clean and to avoid providing food that attracts bears. “Curbside garbage left overnight attracts bears and other wild animals,” Bivona cautioned. The collection of grass clippings; yard waste such as vegetation, plants, and flowers; tree limbs and twigs also began on April 4. Those items will be picked up on Monday for those on a Tuesday and Friday garbage collection schedule and on Tuesday for those on a Monday and Thursday garbage collection schedule. Bivona advised that grass and yard waste must be placed in brown recyclable bags or loose in a reusable sturdy container with no liner and tree limbs or twigs must be cut into three-foot by three-foot sections and bundled. He emphasized that yard waste in plastic bags or landscaping barrels,
and tree limbs or twigs that are not cut into sections and bundled will not be picked up. The leaf compost facility located on DeKorte Drive across from the police station opened April 2 to receive leaves from residents only. No professional landscapers will be allowed to use this facility, Bivona advised, and the facility will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on weekends through May 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and 9 a.m. to noon on Sundays. Large items such as washers, dryers, refrigerators, air conditioners, basketball hoop poles, barbecue grills, bed frames, bicycles, boilers, filing cabinets, freezers, gutters, water heaters, lawn mowers, metal shelving, ovens, stoves, and ranges, radiators, snow blowers, and swing sets will be picked up curbside on the first Friday of every month provided the borough clerk’s office is called at (201) 891-0048, extension 1200, no later than 3:30 p.m. the day before to schedule a pickup. All appliance doors must be removed prior to pickup.

We are in need of gently used clothes in the following sizes: girls 5-7 and 10-12; boys 12-14. Many of our families also need new sheets and towels of all sizes. We also need a few air conditioners with a minimum of 10,000 BTUs. Please contact us before bringing them to our Midland Park office. Thank you. We rely on our local community to help support our families. Many of them do not have the financial or emotional support to help them get through a major illness like cancer. Please remember: We do not charge anything for our services. We rely on you! Approximately 70 cents from every dollar you donate goes towards direct care for our families. If you have a few hours to spare, consider becoming a volunteer or just stop by and meet with us, take a look at our pantry, and see what ECF is all about. Volunteers are welcome to assist on Wednesday and Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. Call us at (201) 612-8118 before you stop by. Please do not leave items at the center without checking with us first. Our storage space is limited. The Northern Regional Center is located at 174 Paterson Avenue, Midland Park, NJ 07432. Visit us online at: www.emmanuelcancer.org.
