Board of education appoints Kuder superintendent
by John Koster Richard D. Kuder has been appointed Wyckoff’s K-8 superintendent of schools for a term that will officially start on July 1 and will run through the 2014 school year. “I am honored by the appointment and opportunity to work with the board, teachers, and staff, and other community stakeholders on the challenges ahead,” Kuder said at the March 28 meeting of the Wyckoff Board of Education. He had been serving as active or interim superintendent since the resignation of Dr. Janet Razze, who left toward the end of the past school year. “The board is pleased to appoint an educator with the passion, dedication, and intellect of Richard Kuder as superintendent of the Wyckoff School District,” said Wyckoff Board of Education President Robert Francin. “He has cultivated and maintained longstanding relationships within the school and community settings. All decisions are made with his deep-seated determination to

do what is best for children in their journey as life-long learners. His ability to lead and inspire others to continually raise the bar enables our Wyckoff children to enjoy a standards-driven, 21st-century approach to learning; one that our community and students deserve. Our district is in capable hands.” Kuder holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Columbia University and a master of educational administration degree from Teachers College of Columbia. He has been with the Wyckoff schools for 10 years and was principal of the Eisenhower Middle School when he stepped forward to fill in for Dr. Razze. The Eisenhower Middle School was recognized as a national Blue Ribbon School two years after he took over as principal. Before coming to Wyckoff, Kuder was a teacher at the American Cooperative School in La Paz, Bolivia. He also taught at Eastern Christian Elementary School and in the Paramus School District and had administrative experience in the Ridgewood school system.
‘Meet the Candidates Night’ coming up
The Wyckoff PTO Coordinating Council will host “Meet the Candidates Night” for those seeking election to the Wyckoff Board of Education. This special informational session will be held April 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Eisenhower Middle School, 344 Calvin Court. Immediately preceding this event will be a Wyckoff Board of Education Budget question and answer session beginning at 6:30 p.m. Both meetings are public. This year, four candidates will vie for two, three-year terms on the Wyckoff Board of Education; they include Karl Drehwing, current BOE President Robert Francin, trustee Thomas Giamanco and BOE Vice President Lisa Martone. Raymond Hovey is running uncontested for a single, one-year term. The format for the evening will allow each candidate to give a two-minute opening statement. Candidates will then be asked pre-selected questions about their experience and views on issues affecting the local school district and education in New Jersey. All participants will be able to answer each question. Audience members may also submit questions, which (continued on page 27)
