LAN helps buildings go green with solar power
environmental sensitivity in mind. With the current economy and focus on daily expenses, many companies are looking for ways to lower their operational costs. Solar power is just one solution towards saving money on utility bills and providing a positive cash flow. With the availability of a 30 percent federal grant towards the full system cost and accelerated depreciation of this cost in year one, there is no better time to do it. Additionally, with the revenue that can be earned by selling SREC (solar renewable energy credits) to the utility company, New Jersey has one of the best state programs for promoting solar installations. Two options exist for interested parties: out-right purchase and PPA (power purchase agreement). Each has advantages and disadvantages and these are dependent on the nature of the facility. Private clients find that out-right purchase gives them the most return on investment. They are able to take advantage of the SREC’s, and after the system is paid off, they enjoy clean, free energy. For public or “non-profit” entities, the PPA is generally a better solution. How can this help municipalities and school districts? Through the use of a PPA, these entities can get solar arrays installed on their building roofs at no upfront costs. The PPA provider would reap the benefits of the Federal and state programs, and the public entity would see a reduction in its electricity costs. This is a win-win situation. Currently LAN is assisting several local school districts in putting together Request for Proposals for PPA installations. Additionally, the firm before the of sustainability moved to of global awareness, LAN has Longthe forefrontconceptenergy efficiency and approached projects with provides Construction Observation Services to ensure a problem-free installation. LAN adopted green design and construction from its inception and has 24 LEED® Accredited Professionals through the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) on staff. We welcome the opportunity to assist your municipality, school district or private facility in analyzing any possible sustainable solutions for your building. Not only will this help to create a healthier, more sustainable balance with the environment, but it may also help keep budgets in balance through reduced energy and operational costs.
