DEP: Bird and butterfly garden is model for others
The Mahwah High School Environmental Club and Environmental Science classes have created a bird and butterfly garden in the school courtyard (pictured). The garden was funded by a grant from the Bergen County Utilities Authority. In order to create the garden, students researched to find native species trees and plants that would benefit the local wildlife. The students also studied solar power and made the centerpiece of the garden a solar-powered water fountain that provides water for the local birds. The garden has been certified by the Department of Environmental Protection as a Wild School Site and is featured on the DEP’s web site as an example for other schools to follow. The garden is used as an outdoor classroom as a way to bring nature into the curriculum. The garden is also a popular site for the students to eat their lunch while enjoying nature.
