Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • September 29, 2010 Mahwah Charles Michael Scully of Mahwah Boy Scout Troop 258 has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor a Boy Scout can achieve. Scully completed the requirements for this rank on Feb. 8, 2010 which was the 100th birthday of the Boy Scouts of America. Scully started his career in Boy Scouting when he joined Pack 197 in September 1999. He advanced through the ranks of Tiger, Bobcat, Wolf, Bear, and Webelo, earning the Arrow of Light in 2004. In February 2004, he bridged to Boy Scouts and joined Troop 258, which is chartered by the Mahwah B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge 1941. He then progressed through the ranks of Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, and Life, while earning 23 merit badges. He served in several leadership positions, including assistant patrol leader, den chief, and troop guide. He attended Camp No-Be-Bos-Co for several summers and canoed at Floodwood Mountain Camp Reservation in the Adirondacks for three summers. For his Eagle project, Scully worked with the New YorkNew Jersey Trail Conference to build a new 50-foot section of the Appalachian Trail at Bear Mountain State Park in New York. Scully, his fellow troop members, and parents volunteered over 450 hours to complete this challenging project. In addition to the new trail, these volunteers also built a bridge and a small retaining wall. Scully’s effort was part of the Bear Mountain Trails Project, which is a major trail building and rehabilitation effort managed by the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference in cooperation with its partners: The Appalachian Trail Conservancy, National Park Service Appalachian Trail Park Office, NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and the Palisades Interstate Park Commission. Each year, over 100,000 hikers use the trails at Bear Mountain. Scully is a senior at Mahwah High School, where he is involved in many activities, including the boys’ varsity soccer team, National Honor Society, French Honor Society, Symphonic Band, Ultimate Frisbee Club, Current Events Club, TOPPS Soccer, and Student Council. He was recently elected treasurer of his class at Mahwah High School. At his recent Eagle Court of Honor, Scully thanked everyone who helped him achieve Eagle status, including his parents, fellow Scouts, and Scout parents, merit badge counselors, the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, and the many dedicated leaders of Troop 258.
