Home Improvement
As homeowners continue to enjoy time on their patios, Gail Tunis, seasonal garden designer for Borst Landscape & Design in Allendale, recommends they take a fresh look around for opportunities to enhance garden beds and borders for spring. Preparing for bulb planting in the fall should be on home gardeners’ calendars now. Ideally, homeowners should take photos of their landscaping in the spring while the flowers and shrubs are in full bloom, because this will help to determine what they would like to move, or define areas that need to be filled in with the color provided by bulbs. Tunis recommends choosing popular bulb varieties for perennial gardens that do not need to be dug up and replaced every year. “Some of the bulbs that do especially well in northern New Jersey and that provide vivid displays over the course of several months are daffodils, hyacinths, muscari, allium, Siberian squill, fritillaria, and

early-blooming crocuses,” she said. “Tulips provide the most glorious colors, and even though they do not perennialize well, I still suggest adding some to the display.” The spring bulb flowering season is predominantly from March through June, depending on climatic conditions. It’s best to choose an assortment of bulbs that provide different colors and bloom at different times, so there is always something beautiful in the garden beds and borders, explained Tunis. She added that the time to purchase spring-blooming bulbs is in the summer when they start appearing in garden catalogs. She recommends looking for firm bulbs when they begin appearing locally in retail garden stores. Spring bulbs can be planted in the fall beginning at the end of September until the ground freezes in December; however, they might have to be ordered so homeowners need to think ahead. Trendy bulbs, such as new tulip varieties, sell out quickly so Tunis advises home gardeners

to order them early. Bulbs should be kept in a cool, dry place, between 50 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit until they are planted.
