The Waldwick Community Alliance has hired a new architectural firm, L+C Design Consultants, PA of Secaucus to work on the renovation of the historic Waldwick Train Station on Hewson Avenue. According to WCA Vice President Doug Cowie, the firm is nearly complete with the Phase I application to the county, state and NJ Transit. “Providing everything is approved, we hope to have a new roof on before this winter. Other items including the sill plate and other exterior work will depend on cost estimates. If they are not done before the winter, they will be first on the list come spring,” Cowie said. WCA is submitting its grant application to the county by the Oct. 8 deadline and is optimistic it will be awarded a grant even though there will be more competition for the available funding because the trust fund is much smaller this year. Cowie explained that several aspects of the WCA application make it more likely to be considered for funding in times of limited resources. One such aspect is the fact that the WCA has done its homework and has a completed historic structure report and completed bid specs. Another factor is fundraising potential. “Because of the quality of our Historic Structure

Report completed by McCabe and Associates and the WCA’s ability to continually raise funds, we have been told that our project will likely be funded,” Cowie said. He said that the county not only looks at the available money raised, but the ability of the organization to raise the necessary 25 percent of the project cost in matching funds, and the depth of planning. “We have spent a lot of money on planning to this point, and I am very happy we did all that,” Cowie said. The overall estimate to refurbish the station is $400,000, but Cowie said that number could be reduced by using volunteer labor and donated materials and by the organization acting as its own general contractor using vari-

Because the building is so old, we are trying to eliminate as many of the `unforeseen’ as possible,” he added. “Progress is slow-but-steady as usual.” The 1876 building, which is listed on the National and New Jersey Registers of Historic Places, has been abandoned since the mid 1970s.
